have just bought a Canton side fireing subwoofer.
most recommendations are to position it in the corner of the room.
1)if i were to put it in the corner, which direction do i point the output
ie at the wall or in the direction of the viewing location?
2)both the sub and the a/v receiver have adjusable frequency cross over set
points.Do they both work?
Thanks in advance

Like most generalizations, this is true only part of the time.
Experimentation is the way to go.

Try it both ways and see which works best in your situation. If the sub
is ported, you'll want to make sure the port isn't up against the wall.

Yes, they both work but don't use the sub's crossover. Turn it up as
high as it will go and leave it there. Use the receiver's crossover.

I have side firing in each of my fronts, and they are in the front corners
of the room with the subs facing the side wall...works well....

Suggest you try the Canton manual.
Because the low bass is omnidirectional, sub placement may not matter
too much. If you place the sub near a wall, I'd leave at least a few
inches between the speaker driver and the wall.
A placement trick: With the sub connected to your AV receiver, place
the sub in the chair you like to listen in. (Or the sofa or wherever
you'd do most of your listening. Then play some CDs and DVDs you like,
with your speakers playing also.
Then walk around your room slowly, including the corners of your room
and anywhere you could place the sub.
When your sub sounds the best to you, swap places with the sub.
IOW, if the sub sounds good when you are in (for example) a particular
corner of the room, put your sub there. Then when you go back to your
chair, the sub should sound good.
It's a simple trick, but it works.
But I'd start by following the Canton manual's suggestions.
