I have an eight year old Toshiba 56" widescreen rear projection TV.
The picture is still great and it's capable of displaying uo up to a
1080i signal. It does not have HDMI inputs but it has component video
inouts.

1. Is it worth it to upgrade my 8 year old DirecTV DVR\receiver to a
new HD DVR\receiver? Will HD TV look that much better?

2. As I will probably replace the TV in 1-2 years, is it worth
getting a Blu-Ray DVD player now to watch Blu-Ray DVDs in 1080i?

thanks

The difference between SD and HD, particularly on a set that size, is
not subtle. And it's more than just resolution, contrast and color
intensity are much better on HD. You definitely are missing out by
watching only SD signals on it. Is it worth it to upgrade your sources?
Depends on how critical you are, but if you've got the HD set you should
definitely use it to view HD signal. I'd go with upgrading the DirectTV
first, then decide if you want to upgrade the DVD to BluRay after you
see HD content on the set. I'm betting you'll upgrade both after seeing
the difference.

If the receiver is SD, then yes, HD will look a lot, lot better. Can't
you watch HD from over the air broadcasts to see?

If you have a progressive scan DVD player now, you should get a really
decent picture from widescreen DVDs. Will Blu-Ray look better? Sure,
but better enough for the cost of the player and the discs? Maybe, maybe
not. If you can Netflix or rent Blu-Ray discs for not much more than
renting regular DVDs, then that may be worth considering. IMHO,
Blu-Ray players aren't worth the cost until they come down in price more
to something under $100-150.

Go HD TV but forget Blu ray until prices go down.
