Howdy Audiophiles,

I was looking for speaker system under $500 and AV Rcvr for also
around the same price. This is my first audio system, so I am fairly
new to this area. If you have any site that you read for reviews, it
would be greatly appreciated.. If you have recently bought any system
and like it, would love to know that as well.

best regards,
Tejas

The forum is a good place for user experiences with HT products, retail
and direct order. There's a growing number of internet-direct products
that are claimed to be a better value than retail products, but in the
end it's up to your ears to decide.

My advice would be to go to a high end store and listen to a good setup
so you get an idea of what to listen for on budget HT.

Check your yellow pages or look in the back of Stereophile magazine for
ads, High-end audio/video stores generally are independant from any
chain stores. Tweeter is the only chain that I know of that has
dedicated listening rooms for systems (but IMO, they're not High-end)

Agree that the Yellow Pages are a good place to start.

However, at a budget of $1k for the receiver + speakers, you may not
find much you can afford in high-end store. However, they're worth a
look, and some high-end stores have gear that's been traded in or is
being sold on consignment that might be in your price range.

Although I'm sure I'll get flamed for this because of the brand name,
here's a good deal ($300) on an HT speaker package:

These speakers are small and unobtrusive in a home. It would be a good
way to get started in HT and they'd be easy to set up and use.

I suggested he go to a High-end store get some education of what to
listen for in a budget system. Then again, he may not like what he hears
from a high end system, but his ears will have to make the final
decision.

Buying used is one way of saving money and I recommend it only after you
have done your homework.
