View Full Version : Problem with HDMI!
Hi there!
I've got a a little problem with my whole home cinema set up, let me
explain:
My samsung TV only has 1 HDMI input, yet I have a PS3 and a samsung
HT-TX35r home cinema.
Here is what I wanted to know:
Is it possible to have HDMI BLU RAY from my ps3 *at the same time* as
HDMI sound coming from the surround sound? I was thinking of connecting
my PS3 via optical cable to the home cinema, but then I got lost with
the "running 2 hdmi's at the same time."
I've read on other threads about switchers, but I dont think thats what
I need, as I dont want to switch easily between the two, i want to use
them both at the same time.
thanks in advance guys!

Does the home theatre have 2 optical in? or maybe an optical in and a coax
in audio? if yes go to A. if no go to B.
A. If it does then take the audio out of the Samsung LCD to one of the
optical in's of the home theatre and the optical out of the PS3 to the other
input. That takes care of the audio, next take the HDMI out from the PS3 to
the Samsung HDMI input. On the Samsung itself you will have video and audio
from the internal speakers whilst on the home theatre you will have BlueRAy
and the Tuner output of the receiver .
and
No you cannot parallel up 2 hdmi's - so you can't have both at the same time
but you could get a HDMI switcher to select either the BlueRay or the
Samsung tuner.
Basically in your situation you would use HDMI for video only and optical /
coax for audio. HDMI audio is no 'better' than optical or coax.
B. You will have to get a HDMI switcher
<g> a diagram would be so much simpler!!! I had a similar situation for a
friends install I was doing and indeed I have a somewhat similar situation
my Samsung only has one HDMI input so I use that for the upscaling DVD
player and take the optical audio to my SONY amplifier. My Beyonwiz PVR has
an HDMI out but I can't use it so I use the component (3 cable) connection
to the Samsung for the video and a pair of rca's stereo only to the back of
the Samsung for basic sound and the optical output of the Beyonwiz to the
second optical input of my SONY for surround sound when I'm not using the
internal Samsung speakers which are crap anyway.... when I get a PS3 I will
connect it via component (it does have component?) and the optical audio to
my third optical in of my SONY home theatre amplifier.
good luck

Que?? HDMI carries audio and video.

The receiver is already a switcher.

Plug the PS3 to the Receiver and then the receiver to the TV as the monitor.
I don't see the problem.
Perhaps you should read the owners manual again? ;-)
Cheers TT

Hi!
thanks for the quick reply! im not quite sure what a coax is, im pretty
new with this type of technology :p any chance you could tell me? haha
http://uk.shopping.com/xPF-Samsung-HTTX35R
thats the technical details to my home cinema.
just to see if i understood you right, in option A i connect audio from
the home cinema via optical or coax to my tv, and optical from my PS3 to
the home cinema? then HDMI directly into the TV?
thanks again for you help!!

As TT says re read the manuals again and then you need to decide how you
want to connect everything up as you have a few alternatives.
The home theatre has 2 optical inputs so that takes care of getting the TV
tuner audio to the amp.
You could connect the PS3 directly to the TV via the HDMI cable. After you
posted the link for the amp I can see no problem - you just have to sit down
with a large piece of paper and draw out alogical map of what you want to
do - heaps of options.
Coax versus Optical audio, basically the same , coax is full Dolby, DTS etc
in digital format that needs to be decoded in the amp as is optical just
different carriers. Wikipedia will give you a full explanation.
The only advantage of HDMI over component video is it is in digital format
and the video and audio is in the one cable. Component video is analog. In
99.9% of real world cases there is no technical advantage. Inside the TV the
video and audio have to be processed into digital to be presented to the
HDMI . The downside of HDMI is you can get time sync errors with some
combination of gear resulting in lip sync problems.

My suggestion
Plug the PS3 via a HDMI lead (if you can get a version 1.3b cable alls the
better mostly still 1.3a in Australia at the moment). Connect the component
output of the Home Theatre into one of the components ins of your Samsung TV
(probably has 2). Connect the Samsung TV audio out using the optical
connector and connect this to the one and only optical input of the Home
Theatre. This unit is really limited as far as options for future
expansion - so you will have to rely on the remaining inputs on the TV for
future toys!.
