Hi guys-
I'm a software developer looking to 'spread my horizons' into home automation in possibly design, software and installation. I've recently renovated, but did not have the funds (or the inclination at the time) to implement any home automation.

I was wondering - what would be the best way to start out in the area. I have had interest from workmates and friends as to what the systems can do, and indeed, some of them are building soon so I have a good chance to 'experiment' :D

I have only concentrated on CBus at the moment as this has the most information that is readily accessible on the web. I realise there are courses in installation, but at $600 and $900 apiece (IIRC) they are an investment I am not inclined to take at the moment. (Although if that is the advice I may review my position on this)

Thanks
Dave

Hi Dave
Most people start off using x10 stuff to control their gear...Several guys in the UK have developed a HA protocol called xPL which is free and mainly pc based stuff ...Have a look here......

http://www.xplproject.org.uk/

Im using an xPL plugin which allows my Homevision controller to send /receive xPL messages.

Dave,

The programming of C-Bus, Minder, Homesafe, Schedule+, Homegate, CLution etc should be no problem. It would just be a matter of doing the time to learn the concepts and the syntax.

The next leap is the installation of components. This would require not only some knowledge of the electrical industry and the associated standards and limits to cable loads etc, but the licensing of the installer as well. This issue is your main hurdle. The actual installation of product must be performed by electrically licensed personnel.

That issue aside there remains plenty of scope for systems integration design and specification works. The one hole in the industry at the moment as I see it is that there is a lack of knowledge in putting it all on paper as a specified project design. The products are available, how they all go together seems to be the missing link. To be able to supply a project design and back it up with programmed components is probably where I would be looking.

Thanks Ross.
I was actually looking at doing some sort of systems designer program, but once I started delving into the specifics of it I realised I would need a lot more experience at the actual installation and integration of the products before I could come up with anything earth-shattering.

I already have an installer interested in expanding their market into this area - in addition to their normal work, they have currently limited their automation products to installing home security systems due to lack of knowledge and/or interested parties.

I shall keep looking/listening/experimenting :)

Dave, CIS have a developer’s kit which would be of interest. I would like to add that sometimes the smallest applications or tools are often the most overlooked. Personally I believe there is great scope for one off applications under the "tools" banner.

Never despise humble beginnings.

I too am interested in the sorts of things you speak of, my brother installs concepts alarm gear and is pushing for me to get involved in his business I believe that adding a new dimension will allow for expansion and bring more work in for us both. I am currently sorting out plans for my first house which will be a "test bed" of sorts to possiblly open up as a demonstration for interested parties. Trouble is I know almost nothing about what is required and am very keen to learn. Also I am keen to find out how much I am looking at for a very basic install? Just the backbone for me to build on in the future as I am short of time and wallet right now. Married then honeymoon now house. I'm sure you understand.
