Broke everything apart this last weekend again.
I'm a tinkering MoFo when I get on a project. LOLOL

Replaced the woofers with new High End Pioneer
Butyl Rubber Surround 12" woofers with 56oz magnets.

And added bracing above AND below the woofers.
Used 1/5in dowels and Gorilla Glue. Really, really
stiffened the cabinets.
(Next will be Dayton Crossovers for the Morel Silk Dome
Tweeters and the Morel Mids)

Found a Denon AVR-2803 STILL IN THE BOX on Craig's List
right here in Pensacola. And got if for a amazing bargain. The guy
wanted HDMI switching for his new flat panel. So he didn't
even install it. Going to set it up this weekend and test out
the new woofers and cabinet bracing. Should really thump!

Now that I have a 6.1 DTS/DD/ProLogicII receiver, I will bring in my
old 12in. Velodyne Servo sub in from the Florida room
and integrate it into the system.

Should sound great for a system made up from discarded components,
bargain finds and driver repairs. :-)

I've been to people's living rooms and in people's cars who have
obviously put some thought and money into a system that "really
thumps", and I can't think of any one thing that's more distracting or
that takes away as much from the enjoyment of the material, whether
it's music or a movie soundtrack. High levels of audible distortion
and/or digital clipping are more obnoxious than thumping, but much
less common, IME. I guess we all like what we like! :)

Excellent...much better to 'recycle' perfectly good equipment than to
throw good money away on new stuff and have the older stuff end up in
a landfill or in the back of a garage somewhere, with mice nesting in
it.

Being an old road dog soundman for many bands in my younger years, thump
to me is a solid kick and deep toms... NOT the frikkin kiddie trim rattling
mud. LOLOLOLOL

:-) Plus much cheaper, and a fun hobby/project. I'm a tinkerer by nature.
This gives me something to play with til my specs for new equipment come
around at a realistic price point. ie the new HD audio CODECS included in
receivers from Rotel & Arcam, and HDMI 1.3. Display technology/price is
just about there for me. But receivers could be as much as a year off yet.

WTF is digital clipping?
When the processed bit goes to 1.5?

Ditto.

Before my band experience though, as a kid my first exposure to true
thump was a pair of Klipschorns driven by a Crown DC300.

Not sure I've ever heard anything like that since.

I carted around backbreaking OAP Folded 18" subs and a rack of Peavy
CS800s for years..... Ugggghhh!
LOLOLOL

Added my Velodyne sub to the system/cabinet by removing the doors and
shelving.
Not optimal having it sit on the cabinet structure, but I isolated my CD
transport the best I could with
foam.

An old friend of mine had D300 driving Altec Lansing A7 "Voice of the
Theater" speakers.. Those were the days! I remember they used to say the
DC300 freq. response specs were "DC to light"! He then went on to Cerwin
Vega sound gear and built his own kilowatt amp because none existed at that
time..

Aahh the good ole' days!
