I am thinking about the above to use as LR/C pack.
No sub and no surrounds (maybe later)for use in a 16'x20' room.
Does any one have a similar set up?
Would these bookshelf speakers be better than the heavy aluminium types i.e
KEF ,MS Genie etc etc?
BEEMERS are good if you have no sub, they are famous for their bass

Sigh...is there no end to your ignorance? A Beemer is a BMW motorcycle. A
Bimmer is a BMW car. And B&W is B&W.

exactly my requirement
seems like everyone disconnects their sub because it gets on their nerves
sooner than later
And since most if not all free to air and cable Dolby broadcasts are 2
channel R and L only why not put all the money into the front speakers which
will get all the use.
OK its good to have the sub and surrounds for those blockbuster epics but
99% of the time is spent watching FTA and cable where dialog and music and
not effects dominate.
I have been to a few shops to audition speakers and without fail they all
crank the level up as much as they can to impress. But who actually waches
and listens at these levels?
Am I missing something?

In my opinion you can't go wrong with B&W..
I will outfit my new theater with a B&W setup.
(Ivan still has us homeless).
But to say that most people disconnect their sub at some point
is completely WRONG..IMO. And kinda sounds like a way to justify
not having a sub, or this is advise is coming from someone
who doesn't have a sub or experienced a quality setup with a sub.
Have you heard a setup with a "good" sub and proper X-overing &
EQing? And it's not just Blockbusters that utilize the LFE channel..
You don't need to listen at reference levels to have the sub come into play.
Without a sub you still have a table with 3 legs.... but there is
nothing wrong
with buying one set of components at a time to build a system..

I used to have a pair of DM603s which I thought were pretty decent speakers
on their own, but I would
recommend planning on getting a sub eventually. I ended up replacing them
with CDM-7SE's
and an ASW3000 sub. As someone else pointed out, B&W may not be the most
amazing
speaker but I think it's a good value for the $$$ and you can't go wrong
with them.

yes but how does a top of the range compact speaker like the KEF 2005
compare to a good bookshelf like the B&W's?

you know the answer to that.... go listen!! :). seriously, bookshelf or
not,
size doesn't equal sound. Hell, the Nautilus 805's are bookshelf but sound
better than many full size high end speakers IMO. My CDM-1SE rears are
bookshelf and again I'd put them up against many full size speakers. If you
haven't found it already, here's a decent site for reviews:

yes i know but i wish there was a way to quantify the difference.so many
speaker manufacturers out there cant somebody come up with a sound rating
that the layman who has not heard a million speakers understand.

even a full blown review won't tell you how it will sound like in your
room, and how you position speakers can make a good speaker sound bad
and mediocre speakers sound acceptable.

Its a free country and you can call anything anything you want, this being a
group abouth HT then you can assume any talk of "beemers" is about B&W,
UNLESS you're a little autistic and have trouble understanding such things.
I have heard beemers called beemers forever
BUT your right, bimmer is A CAR... but thats not what I'm calling them!
As for bmw motorcycles, gay eurotrash being the only ones riding them, they
are hardly worth mention, arent they?

Is that the same as claiming that DENON is a British owned company?

Are you refering to, perhaps, B&W's now? Forever? Yeah, right. BMW bikes
were called Beemers way before there was even a B&W around. And just because
you hear the echo that you get when your head is up your ass doesn't mean
much. Once again, just because you are such a massively ignorant twit,
whatever you decide to call something has to be what everyone else must call
them, tradition and taste be damned.

Another example of your denigrating things you aren't either rich enough buy
or tasteful enough to appreciate? Got a lot of latent homo-phobia going on
there for a straight guy Steveo.

Over and over and over and over again, flailing against facts with a wall of
ignorance and arrogance. Most people don't believe ignorance is a virtue,
but not ol'Steveo here. He's from the "I like to hit myself in the face
because it feels so good when I stop." school, except he never stops.

The truly scary part is that his boyfriend/girlfriend/wife/inflatable
doll/whatever is probably so stupid as to think he's the greatest thing
since sliced bread. I guess ignorance IS bliss.

I don't recall who it was, but I vaguely remember a comedy routine
where the comic suggested using the incorrect word for everything
whenever speaking in front of your infant children, so that by the time
they attend their first day of school, they are speaking complete
gibberish. I'm guessing that Steve-O's parents took that suggestion
seriously. As a result, he probably likes duck farts & lard on a
hotdog.

I think his right hand is quite fond of him...
well, the 2 channel you describe is often analog dolby surround, or
pro-logic , and properly presented can sound quite good.
But I do turn off my sub for music most times, finding that I prefer my 2
channel stuff "straight". Probably just the old hi-fi dog in me
