I recently bought the Yamaha Home Theatre in a Box model YHT-450.
This includes the receiver model HTR-5740. I am trying to hook up my
Sony dvd player to it, which is model DVD-NS700P.

I can't seem to get the surround sound feature to work with these two
components. After setting up the Yamaha system, I went through the
basic setup procedure, and the speakers and subwoofer were hooked up
properly. I hooked up the dvd player using the cable that was
included, plugging the red RCA jack into the digital out coaxial jack
on my dvd player and into the Digital input coaxial jack in the
receiver. I also plugged in the yellow jacks to the video out of my
DVD and into the dvd video jack of the receiver. I don't know why it
has you do this since my DVD player is plugged in directly to my
toshiba hd set through the three component jacks. My friend said this
was probably in case I wanted on screen menus from the receiver to
show on the television. Anyway, the set-up sheet showed it hooked up
like this, so I did.

I put in the dvd of "Saving Private Ryan", thinking this would be a
good movie to hear surround effects. I selected DVD auto as the
input. There was no sound at all. I looked through my Sony dvd
manual. I went to the Audio setup screen for the dvd player, and
under "Digital Out", I selected On, under "Dolby Digital" I selected
Dolby Digital, and under "DTS" I selected On. Still no sound. After
checking the manual again, on page 75 I found out that if you have one
of the TVS settings turned on, the player would not output thru the
digital out jacks, Coaxial or Optical, so I made sure to turn this off
as well. Still no sound.

I finally hooked up a pair of Standard RCA cables from the Audio Out
left and right jacks of the dvd to the audio in jacks of the receiver.
I finally had sound and though the sound was excellent, it came only
from the two front speakers, the center speaker, and the subwoofer.
There was very little sound coming from the back speakers, or back
center.

I next tried a dvd with DTS, "Dracula". When I put the dvd in I went
to the audio setup on the dvd itself and selected DTS. When I hit
play, I again had no sound. The DTS light never came on in the
receiver, so it seems it is still not getting any digital signals from
the DVD player. I know my friend Jon had a lot of problems getting
his surround to work, until he came across one final setting, some
option for selecting a bit stream, and once he found this, everything
fell into place. I wonder if there is one last selection I need to
make to turn on the Surround sound.

I don't know if going through the Digital Optical jacks would help or
not. The setup for using the Optical jacks is the same as the one for
using the Digital Coaxial jacks, so I don't know why this would make a
difference, but maybe some one out there has tried it with some
success. Anyway, any help will be gratefully appreciated. Thanx in
advance.

Hi.
Although I am new to this stuff I may be able to help.
I recently got a HTR-5730.
I connected the DVD player using the coax connector and like you have no
sound when the receiver is set to DVD, I have to set mine to CD AUTO and
then it picks up the DVD signal. With the HTR-5730 I think you can change
the mapping of the cables to different settings so the DVD actualy is the
DVD option, this may be availible with the 5740.
Also just make sure that the DVD player is set to output through the coax
connector and not RCA or something.
Hope this help, like I said I could more than likely be wrong.

I just set up one of these systems last night so I know what your problem
is.

Go into the Manual Setup for the 5740, select the Input Options, select
input A(3) and assign it to DVD. In order to do this you will have to
change A(1) to something other than DVD, like CD or CD-R. This way when you
select the DVD input it will pull sound from the coax connection rather than
optical.

Does this mean that if I had a Digital Optical cable plugged in, I
would be all set right now? The reason I ask, is that my friend said
that I would get better sound with the digital optical cable than with
the cable that came with the set, or with a digital coax cable. If
so, and I am going to pick up an Optical calble anyway, should I just
leave all the settings the way they are and be ready to go, or will I
still have to re-assign the inputs? Thanks for the help.

Yes, if you had used optical it would have worked right out of the box
without having to reconfigure anything. I don't really know why Yamaha
chose this arrangement since 90+ % of DVD players seem to have coaxial.
Regarding your friend's comment, with this system you won't hear any
difference between coax and optical. They're both digital connections and
therefore just have to transmit 1s and 0s. Some people argue that coax can
be susceptible to EMI/RFI and that optical may have problems with jitter but
I've personally never been able to hear any difference. Optical does have
the disadvantage that you can't bend the cable very tightly--I've lost one
cable because I bent it too far and it fractured the core. Coax is
heavier-duty, so to speak. Also for digital cables it doesn't matter if you
buy the most expensive Monster Cable or the least expensive Recoton--if it
works it works 100%. You might find the connectors to be a little sturdier
on the more expensive cables, although Monster Turbine is more of a PITA
than a "feature."
