I have an older InFocus projector I picked up a while ago. There are
lots of specks in the picture, shadows of something, all to one side.

I don't think it's dust, or perhaps it is some kind of dirt/dust
INSIDE the lens where it cannot be wiped clean.

Anyway, if anyone knows how I might be able to find the source of the
problem as well as any tips for solving it, please respond.

Thanks.

It's almost certainly dust on the LCD panel. When it gets this bad it's
often a good indication that the projector hasn't been maintained,
particularly frequent cleaning of the dust filter. Projectors with a
lot of dirt inside are also frequently prone to burned out LCDs, caused
by heat build-up from the clogged filters.

You can try opening it up and blowing out the dust, but if the LCD
becomes misaligned with the lens/prism/reflector you may end up needing
it serviced.
