View Full Version : Plasma/LCD over Fireplace

I have a fireplace in the middle of my loft that is unvented. It just
burns gas and spits the heat out into the room. Of course the perfect
place to hang a nice new flat-screen TV is above that fireplace.

When I have the fire on and hold my arm above it where the TV would be
it is pretty hot.

Is there any guidance on temperature ranges, or is this just a really
bad idea?

Who says there is no such thing as a stupid question? :-)

I hear it is a common issue. Walk into any electronics store and you
will hear people asking the same question. The answer I was looking for
is how hot is too hot.

Ask your question at AVSFORUM.

This is the Plasma Forum. It is worth doing a lot of reading here. And
you can post questions after you get a screen name.
AVSFORUM is an excellent place to learn more.
I found out about the projector I ended up buying from posters at AVS in
July, '03. It was an excellent purchase. I've gotten a lot of good
advice. And rude people don't last long there. People are there
because of common interest.

OK, I will head over there.

In case anyone here can help I took the temperature of the wall and 3"
off the wall with the fire roaring, it went over 110F. That's bad. I
have no mantel and I'm wondering if this might help enough to put the
TV there. If I get a no go on this, I am out to buy a tube TV... sucks.

Have you considered DLP? A DLP won't hang on the wall, but there are
definitely advantages (clarity, no converenge, no degradation over time,
etc). I finally took the plunge and bought a 61" DLP three weeks ago. My
jaw is still hanging open at the picture (I got an HD cable box, and a
matching upconverting DVD player). Truly awesome!!! There is *NO* reason
*EVER* to buy a tube TV!

If you piss money, I can't argue with this.

I bought the LCD, we'll just have to see what the fire does to it.

Can you tell us about it? The Picture Quality and sound. What model is
it. How are you mounting it.

Good luck! Keep us posted.

It's a Sharp Aquos 32" LC-32G4U. Looks fantastic. I use the
functionality that lets me use the TV speakers as my 5.1 center
speaker. Pretty cool. I have HD cable and a Windows Media Center hooked
up to it. I don't remember the name of the mount but it has a fixed 5
degree tilt, but I haven't mounted it yet... Very happy.

I still fear the fire...
