I am seriously considering getting one of these things and am curious to the
actual PQ. Is it a lot better than normal DVD players? I know there are a
few movies out now that are "mastered in HD". Just wondering what kind of
quality to expect. Don't wan to get it if it's just going to be a tiny
improvement. Thanks.

I've been wondering this myself and all the reviews that i've (Samsung
and LG) read say that the component PQ is better than the DVI.

Momitsu still makes a couple that will upconvert through component. Some
pretty good stuff at avsforum.

Bottom line is DVD is no better than 720x480. Save your cash for now and get a
high-def dvd player in 18 months or so. We still have no idea what format they
will be as of yet which should tell you something.

The "mastered in hd " is hype, they probably used a high definition print,
which will give you a great picture, but it will STILL be 480p, and without
the processing of a megabuck scan converter you cant make a silk purse out
of a sows ear, you cant increase resolution of a format.
Abouit the best you can hope for is a hdtv that uses the "hdtv" color for
DVD'S.
Dont get me wrong, the players that "upscale" to 1080i look great, but all
they really do is output around 520, to 540 lines progressive, which when
interlaced gives you 1080i

Does that mean it looks as good as broadcast HDTV?
