View Full Version : Optimum Connections for Foxtel IQ / DVD / TV setup

Hi guys.
I have a CRT TV that takes SCART or RF only.
But to go from my Foxtel IQ to the TV I have the outputs:
SCART
S-Video
RF
We can forget the RF. What is the best quality connection to use. In
the Foxtel IQ settings I am able to select RGB, PAL, S-Video or YUV.
I am not sure what is the best setting/cable to choose.
There is, also, an additional SCART socket on the Foxtel IQ, labelled
VCR SCART. I believe this is an input to watch DVD players (etc.)
through the Foxtel IQ.
My DVD player has the outputs:
Video (just plain old RCA?)
Digital Coaxial
S-Video
Y Cb/Pb Cr/Pr
The DVD player manual lists the video settings as:
S-Video for Video or S-Video connection.
Interlace-YUV for "Y Cb Cr"
P-Scan YPBPR for Y Pb Pr connection on HDTV.
I'm guessing digital coaxial won't connect to scart.
I was wondering if problems could arise from channeling the DVD through
the IQ. Do I have to use the same video output standard for both the
DVD & the IQ? Does the IQ just route the DVD signal through or dose it
decode then re-encode?
Thanx 4 looking.

RGB or YUV are the best to use. Hopefully your TV will accept one or the
other via SCART. Have a look in your TV's manual.

Thanx 4 your help.
The manual has a pin listing for the SCART & amongst the pins are Earth
& Signal for Red, Green & Blue. So I guess at the least it will accept
RGB. So if this is better than S-Video I will buy a SCART cable. I
can try YUV in the Foxtel settings, too, since they both use the same
cable. Which is superior RGB OR YUV?

They're pretty much identical, especially with the relatively poor quality
of foxtel.

Using a SCART to SCART cable and selecting RGB on the Foxtel
box produces an excellent signal (well as good as it gets
anyway).
In terms of quality from worst to best it goes:
RF, composite video, S-Video, component video, RGB.
However the biggest jump in quality is between composite
video and S-Video. The next jump to component video is
rather small, and again to RGB is small.
You can then use a composite video to SCART cable to
get the signal from the DVD. Use the AV button on
Foxtel to pass the DVD signal to the TV. There is
no encoding/decoding done. The Foxtel STB will set
a SCART signal to disable RGB and enable composite
video while that is active.
While the composite is not the best quality, you are
limited by what your TV accepts. You normally cannot
pass S-Video over an SCART connector. However some TVs
support enhanced SCART which allows S-Video. However
enhanced SCART doesn't support automatic switching to
S-Video like it does to RGB, so both the TV and STV
have to support a menu option to manually enable
S-Video otherwise it won't work. Also I don't think
Foxtel supports switching S-Video from the VRC SCART
to the TV SCART anyway.
