View Full Version : DVD player repairable?

Hi all,

I've got a Denon 2800 DVD player that recently has hung in the middle of
a brand new disk and refused to start playing another brand new disk -
Nemo and Ants respectively. Both disks work fine in the XBox.

I've got some VCDs that work but the very mildly scratched disks hang
but work fine in the xbox.

It seems fine when first turned on but if it's been going for over an
hour it starts to have issues which it didn't in the past.

I think it's 3 years old - was bought second hand at 10 months old for $800.

Has anyone experienced similar issues with their DVD player? Is it
repairable without replacing the entire guts or at least the most
expensive parts?

What new DVD player would be equivalent and how much would it cost?

Thanks for any advice.

Sometimes more expensive equipment is more temperamental than cheap stuff
i.e. the X-Box.
Sounds like when the unit heats up a connection on a circuit board "cracks
open"(a crack in solder expands). This can take a lot of time to track down
and with labour would be costly to repair.
You mention this is a few years old. If you don't want the latest and
greatest you can often pick up older models cheaper when they are replaced
with new ones in stores. New Year sales are close and places like Harvey
Norman sometimes do trade-ins

Thanks Coco. The New Year sale sounds like a plan.

Now the question is, what should I replace it with?

It's feeding a semi-HD plasma that is capable of a very good quality PAL
SD picture. Seeing as the DVD player is mainly used by the toddlers,
they'll be happy with the XBox so perhaps we should wait for BluRay to
come in and drop in price too.

Playstation 3 out early next year has blu-ray and hard drive built in and by
all reports cheaper than the Samsung blu-ray and much cheaper than the
panasonic. Having said that it is rumoured to only output HD video via HDMI
version 1.3 (which isn't on the market yet), and if you don't have it
connected via HDMI ver1.3 then you'll get a down converted (ie not 1080p)
image. It's all about what kind of quality you want and when you want it.
Probably be another 12 months before blu-ray prices drop (Windows Vista,
Playstation3 will not let technology settle next year). Pioneer are rumoured
to have a model that will play HD-DVD and Blu Ray (&SA-DVD). The fence is
continually moved as far as the blu-ray recorders are concerned.

I read about the PS3 the other day and it sounded like a cheap_er_ way
to get into BluRay.

Unfortunately our plasma only has vga and component video inputs, via a
"media" box which converts the inputs to digital I suppose. It's 5 years
old.

The 'fence' might be continually moved... but not when it comes to a
universal player to play both HD-DVD and Blu Ray. There is no chance, repeat
no chance, of a universal player being built, now or ever. In other words
you take your money and you make your choice.

The Pioneer BRD-103 at http://www.salesmart.com.au/dvdrw/dvd_burners/
is reported as a hybrid. Not saying it's a fact but wouldn't discount it yet
either.

Funny how no other site (other than an Australian one) seems to talk
about that drive! In fact Pioneer themselves deny it:

''

"On September first, we reported, along with many other websites, that
Pioneer would provide hybrid, Blu-ray/HD-DVD blue laser drives, in the
near future. This was of course very exciting news, however, sadly, it
has turned out to be false.

We have received a mail this morning from a representative of Pioneer,
he has told us stories originating during this years IFA in Berlin,
were incorrect and do not reflect their current plans. The Pioneer
representative, stated to CD Freaks that his standard response to this
question: "Does Pioneer have any plans to support HD DVD?" is as
follows:

"Currently we have no plans to do so..... however, Pioneer will monitor
the market situation with other formats and will "consider" to adopt
those formats as and where the market is demanding it".

He went on to say that his comments to some press people at IFA have
been taken totally out of context and that it has been concluded by
themselves that Pioneer would be introducing HD DVD support into their
3rd generation BD writer model.

Pioneer has clarified the statement further by saying this.....
"Currently we have no plans to do so....."

This is incorrect.

The Playstation 3 requires the HDMI 1.3 CABLE to play 1080p video - ie
it is the HDMI part (not the 1.3 part) that is required. From a video
point of view, the HDMI 1.3 gives a broader colour palette (30+ bit
instead of 24bit)). For most people, the displays cant display this
range of colours anyway.

They playstation quite happily ouputs 1080p video images via the
backwardly compatible HDMI 1.3 cable - the problem was that they didn't
supply this with the player!

No chance and I mean no chance, the HD-DVD/Blue ray camps have always
dismissed releasing hybrid drives either now, in the future or ever. Coupled
with region/copyright restrictions and both systems will sink faster than
the Titanic, regardless of how good they are.

I remember the same thing being said years ago of SACD and DVDA. Now just
about every machine made is a hybrid of those formats. I wouldn't mind
betting you'll see hybrid HD DVD and Blue Ray machines with 18 months, once
the dust has settled.
