It just came out, I saw it being pedaled at Costco; they were bundling
it with an 80" screen and some kind of carry case along with it.

The screen looked like a standard roll up type unit you use with 16mm or
a slide show. Maybe it had some draping and a box around it but since it
was in a mock up display set I couldn't be sure how much you got and how
much was set.

The image was decent (notably they were playing Lilo & Stick, an
animated feature) but this thing seems to be putting a premium on
portability. It has built in speakers and a DVD player. Out the back it
has some (lets see..)s-video and stereo connects & you can hook up a
digital out RCA jack.

Its a bunch of cash but it seems somebody who was traveling and doing
presentations might benefit from an all in one package like this.

Any thoughts on how it might fit a niche? Bang for the buck?

Some specs:

Hmmm, maybe I should get paid.
This is dangerously close to shilling.

Resolution is low, but it's got all the right connectors and it's DLP

Without knowing the "buck" I can't comment on the "bang"

With only 800x600, I'd pass myself, but definately looks like a handy tool
for someone needing a portable unit.

No, you didn't. Perhaps you saw it being peddled?

One caveat about small projectors is that they can often be quite a
bit louder (fan noise) than their larger brethren. I borrowed a
projector from work (an InFocus LP-70, maybe?) that was really tiny
and had a high-res (1024 x 768) picture, but it was also insanely
loud. Like I felt I had to turn up the volume a notch or two above
what I'd usually use, just to make sure quiet passages were audible.

I don't know what good numbers are for projector quietness, but do
compare this small HP's numbers to those of an InFocus ScreenPlay 4805
or something like that. And keep in mind that dB ratings are
logarithmic, so that 30dB is *10 times* the sound energy of 20dB, and
even 23dB is *double* the sound energy of 20dB.
