I am moving into a new place and I need recommendations for a good HT
speaker package. I have a Yamaha HTR - 5840 receiver. The room I am
going to put these speakers in is a large family room with 2 story
celings. I looked at a set of Klipsch speakers at a local audio/video
boutique store. They sounded really good but I am worried they will not
sound good in such a large room. The package was approximately $800. Do
any of you have any good recommendations for a speaker package (no
bose!!).
Thanks,
Mojo

Klipsh makes a good speaker, but not everyone likes their sound. You get alot for the money as they are very efficient.
I find them too bright for my tastes, though. Like Justin asked, is $800 your limit? There are alot of other very
nice speakers out there. I happen to like Definitive Technologys myself.

You're speaker budget is too small or your room is too big.

Pro installer says:
Bose is just a name that you are paying for. These
speakers are not that great (sound-wise) and too
small for a large room. Recommend bookshelf speakers
for front channel, if you have room in the cabinet.
Recommend pedestal speakers for sides and rear.
Position speakers so that tweeter is at ear level, when
you are sitting down. Don't use cheap speakers for side
and rear. You must have a sub woofer. klipsch is a good
choice, but remember what sounds good to you is most
important. specs and advertising mean little compared
to your own ears. Also- big speakers are better especially
in a large room, no matter what volume level you play at.
Save up money and buy bigger, you will be happier.

I used Level 2 (Living room theatre) from http://htd.com/.
I don't claim to be an audiophile, but I've had Bose in the past and these
are much better and half the price. They give a 30 money back garuntee.

Thank you everyone for your suggestions. My budget is about $1200. The
walls are already prewired and I would like to go with the wall mounted
satellites as opposed to floor standing speakers. The distance from the
fronts to the center of the listening area is about 11 feet and from
the sourrounds it will be about 8 feet. The speakers will be positioned
about 7 feet high on the walls. The celing in this room is about 20
feet high.
I will add floor standing speakers to this set eventually but that is
not in my budget right now.
Thank you for all your help!!

I use Klipsch in my theater room and I love em'. I am using the THX Ultra 2
system which is a bit over your budget, but the new models they have are
also very nice. They do sound crisp and are very clean but some people
don't like that. It is all up to what you like in your sound..

If you got around $800, SVS has a new 5.1 system out with one of their
famous subs included.
And the system has gotten very very good reviews from several magazines
and reviewers.
I would seriously look into the SVS system.

Magnapans in the front (OK Dahlquist acceptable)
JBL pedestals for sides and rear
Volkswoofer is good (powered)
dont use junkie little speakers for sides and rear
little speaker= little sound quality
Lexicon surround processor, I allow that
THX rules, Dolby (i think not)
You would be surprized what you can buy used
B-o-s-e= Buy Other Sound Equipment
Bose? why bother?

And no voice matching among any of them....... ragged holosonic
soundfield result,
a narrow soundstage with no discernible stage placement..

did it ever occur to you that the reason these bose systems
sound good to the semi trained ear is a digital delay chip
inside the preamp? This chip creates the "Wide Field"
effect. before bose used it, we had it in pro sound effects units,
before that it was in a radio shack equalizer with "wide sound"
push button. This is the SAD 1024 chip, audio bucket brigade.
without the delay chip, bose speakers sound like any other
transistor radio. Bose, a "totally different kind of speaker"- Im
a frayed knot, Andwar! "A totally different kind of advertising"
is more like it. People want these speakers because they saw
them on TV.
