View Full Version : DVI disappointment. Any ideas?

I finally got around to hooking up my PT500AE PJ to my HD STB using a
DVI cable expecting an picture quality improvement over the component
cable connection... NOT so. There is pixelation all over the place,
particularly in areas of solid colour such as a light sky scene or black
background which comes up with dark blue patches and also what appears
to be noise in changes of contrast. This only shows up when on 1080i
or 756p. If in lower resolution output from the set top box, the picture
is clean.

When changing stations on the STB in higher resolution modes, the black
background has dark blue flecking though it. This doesn't happen on
component or lower res on DVI.

Any ideas what is likely to be the source of the problem? Though now
that I've written this I'm suspecting the STB... (Teac 800)

Cheers,
Nick.

Can you try a different DVI cable over a much shorter distance? DVI
doesn't seem a sensible design for cable, and most seem to be built down
to hit a price point. If your computer has DVI and your video card can
handle 1080, try driving your PJ with that from a downloaded HD trailer
over the present cable.

I (had) the same setup, and after a great picture initially, it slowly
degraded. Turned out that it was the DVB-800 and the mainboard was replaced
under warranty. The same thing happened again a few months later, this time
out of warranty. I ended up replacing the box.
