View Full Version : Using Speaker Wire as Coax?

I moved my tv to the opposite side of the room and now have no coax
outlet... but have Monster Cable 12 gauge speaker wire running under
the hardwood floor. Is there anyway I can use the speaker wire as my
coax cable, or do I need to rewire the coax to the other side of the
house?

You should rewire. Odds are that the speaker wire, even if connected
correctly, will give you a lot of noise/hum since it is unshielded.

Never work, speaker wire is designed to carry voltage where coax carries RF.
You would have horrendous ingress problems on the few low channels that you
did get and maybe enough egress to have the FCC show up or interfere with
airline communications.

It's probably impossible, but can you use the speaker wire to pull the coax
under the floor, thereby replacing the speaker wire with coax?

Not true, RF (Radio Frequency) is a signal transmitted through the air!
Coax also carries voltage, it just that it's a very low voltage. But
regardless, speaker wire should never be used for low level inputs/outputs.

I guess that AC3-RF output on my laserdisc player really isnt then.
