Has anyone had any trouble trying to learn a Universal Remote either an
MX-500 or MX-600 to the new HD Tivo box for Direct TV. I have tried
time and time again and still have had no good luck. I have tried 2
different remotes to clone the remote and it does not want to work
normally. The Univeral Remote does not work all the time but "when and
if" if feels like it, it does actually change the channels. I have even
tried to move the equipment so it shoots the IR directly into the Tivo
unit. Does anyone have any ideas what else I can try?
Thanks

I don't have any experience with those devices unfortunately. I do know that
some manufacturers use odd codes, or codes that require higher frequencies.
B&O and Proton are very hard to control with universal remotes, most won't
handle the higher freq codes. One symptom of a universal remote that is
borderline (i.e. the codes are at the upper limit of its frequency ability)
is that the thing works intermittently, sometimes it'll change the channel,
sometimes not. I had a lot of problems getting a remote to work my Proton
stuff (eventually went with a Marantz RC2000 MkII, which I still use).
Sometimes it also takes a number of tries to get the remote to learn
difficult codes too.
Trying another brand of remote is one possibility. Check to see if the
Proton TVs are listed as something it'll work, that usually indicates it'll
handle more difficult codes. Perhaps the Direct TV boxes are similar in
using higher freq codes.
I'm sure someone on here must have tackled this problem, hopefully they'll
respond.
