View Full Version : Onkyo TX-SR504 vs. H/K AVR 140
Has anyone here heard any of these? Or even better did a comparison of
them? What are your thoughts on their sound quality? I am not really
interested in the features of each unit just which you think sounds
best.
Thanks

I've listened to several different brands including the above as well as
Denon, Marantz, Pioneer, etc., and all of them essentially sounded the
same. A good receiver SHOULD sound the same as any other.
The differences will be in the noise floor (no background hiss in
surround modes) and features that make it convenient or fun to use.
I bought a Marantz receiver because it was the nicest looking model at
the time and blended well with my system. It has all the features I
wanted and it was reasonably priced.

As a dealer/installer for both brands, I have to say that Harman Kardon
has a warmer, more musical sound than the Onkyo. On a dollar
value/features basis (which you clearly state is not the issue here)
Onkyo wins every time. I have liked the 'sound' of Harman/Kardon for
30 years, and there is absolutely an audible difference between the two
companies' (actually between Harman and most consumer Japanese brands)
sound.
We'll see what other opinions follow...
