I have been tasked with selecting and installing a projector for a
church.
The church has lots of ambient and artificial lighting. I have
purchased the Optoma EP759 (DLP, 3500 lumens), however it's just not
bright enough! Luckily the supplier is happy to give me a refund or
alternative projector.

So.... Does anyone know of or had any experience of installing a
projector within the approx £2,200 / $3,000 price range that will do
the job?

Additional Info:
3.5 meters wide screen
Projected from 7 meters

Thanks in advance
Owen

For a screen of this size in this lighting condition, you need a
projector that is targeted for this condition. Optoma does not make one.

Have you seen the broadcasts of the Academy Awards in the USA?? Those
are screens that are the size of this one, in some cases. The
projectors they use have lumen outputs of 8,000 to 18,000 and they use
more than one of them to make the large image in the center of the
stage. Also note that they carefully control the light AROUND the screen.

Unfortunately, these projectors cost far more than gbp 2,200. I
suggest you contact www.digitalprojections.co.uk and get someone to come
out to see you and to evaluate your situation before making a
recommendation. DP will, if conditions warrant, rent or have someone
else rent you a suitable projector so that your congregation can see
what a proper installation will look like, then evaluate the cost and
see if it is worth doing.

If you turned all lights out in the church, projected ONLY at night,
this projector would be fine with a 1.0 gain screen. But with the
lights on in a typical worship service, the ambient light that will fall
on the screen is 50-100 lumens or MORE. A 3500 lumen projector, if
indeed it puts out 3500 ANSI lumens (and many do not) will only put
around 25-40 lumens on the screen. With ambient light higher than this
in a typical worship service, the image will be barely detectable.

IMO you are considerably underbudgeted. The caregory of product you're
looking for is "large venue projectors," and you probably need one of
8000 lumens or more. This is going to run you $15 or so.

If this is simply impossible, you'll just have to turn off the lights.
You could get away with something in the 4500 lumen range if the room
was reasonably dark.

Hmm..Either turn the lights off or add about $15,000 to your budget.

That's
"category"
and
"$15k"

I suggest looking at the inventory on www.brightandsleek.com.

Find a projector with at least 8000 lumen output and a resolution that
is acceptable for your venue. Usually that is at least 1024x768

and by the way, $18K may still not be enough

www.projectorcentral.com is also a big help in finding such projectors.
You are looking for LARGE venue, Large Conference room projectors

two Sonys are in the $10K-$11k range and have 6000 lumens, not quite enough

There is a Sanyo with 7700 lumens at $22K

Eiki has two models at $20K and 6500 lumens, not enough and two models
at 10,000 lumens and 12,000 lumens at $30,000 each

The projectors usually used for large venue things like the Academy
awards and touring artists are in the $50K and up range, some are in the
$150,000 to $250,000 range

From the lists of projectors you can find on these two web sites, go
talk to your dealer and see if they can get any of these projectors.

Guy's

Thanks for your comments and suggestions...

I was onsite yesterday. Data (SVGA projection) can be seen clearly
even with the house lights on and sunlight streaming through the
windows. The problem is with showing video. The room would have to be
in darkness to view video footage; however we are happy with the
quality for data.

Having discussed this with the client we have come up with the
following solutions:

1. Put up curtains on both side of the screen where most of the light
is reflecting on to the screen (I am looking at blinds systems can be
controlled by switch or by remote control)

2. Purchase another projector for viewing video in another room/hall
better suited for viewing video, where the room can be completely
darkened and a better surround sound system can be installed.
