Carpentry and the like, sure, but electronics are so advanced these days
that it would be like building your own SUV.
I'M afraid that the days of the heathkit are gone, but you can still build a
sub from a kit, or other kinds of speakers
I just spent a weekend building a Sauder wall unit, the sistine chapel was
probably easier to assemble. Does that count?
But basically hometheaters have to be custom made, as houses are custom
made. Knowing simple stuff like making cable and wiring together a cabinet
full of gear as well as building the cabinet can save a ton of money.
But I saw this simple wall unit on sale for half price, and its a lot more
polished than anything I could concoct for my new "home theater wall" so I
abandoned the trip to home depot and saved a lot of time and tears.
Lets face it if you're not a master carpenter your set up will look a little
rough around the edges , You can just get a lot more buying prefab is all.
My new wall unit, a huge impulse purchase for instance. In the smaller area
of my place its HUGE and a lot better looking than I remember in the store.
It would take forever to build such a thing myself, and I will no doubt do
so in the future. I am constantly engineering my ultimate HT in my head for
when finances, nerves, and time allows. Arent we all?
