For 1000, you can get a good 6.1/7.1 JBL setup with their Northridge line
of speakers. For the higher end, you could get a Axiom 5.1 setup:

Other choices to look at include Mirage and Energy.

Hi, I'm in the market for a new Home Theater system, I used to have a
Samsung HTIB (Home Theater in a Box) which was ok for movies, but music
on it sucked.

I'm not sure if I should get a system with satellites speakers and a
sub, or if should get floor standing speakers for the front and
surround, a center channel and a sub as well, or maybe a combination of
both. I'm very new at this so please help.

I'm looking to spend $1,000 - $1,500 on just the speakers. If I could
get a decent configuration for less money even better.

The system it's going to be mainly for movies, but I want to enjoy good
sound while playing music.
I want to say 60% Movies, 40% Music.

Thank You

Spend the most on the front left and right, and center, especially if you
love music, you can upgrade the surrounds later, they really arent as
important .
And dont forget the sub

Using either the small satellite speakers, or big floorstanding
speakers, can sound fine.

Given that you'll have to live with the speakers, you may want to go
with the small satellite speakers, because they take up less space.

One advantage of the floorstanding speakers, however, is that they can
often deliver plenty of bass, so you might not want or need a
subwoofer. No subwoofer means you don't need space for it and you
wouldn't need to hook up the sub either.

Keep in mind that with the small satellite speakers, you may need floor
stands or wall stands to hold the speakers, and buying those stands may
add to your budget.

Energy, Mirage, and Sound Dynamics are good brands; they're actually
from the same company. The same company also makes Athena speakers,
which are also good and sold through Best Buy stores.

Some of the Energy satellite/subwoofer speakers:

Athena has satellite/subwoofer and floorstanding speakers that have
also gotten many good reviews:

Paradigm and PSB are a few more good brands. I doubt you could go wrong
with any of the above brands.

Actually, there are a lot of good speaker brands. What's most important
(IMHO) is that you shop and buy only locally, if at all possible. That
way you can hear the speakers before you buy and work with the dealer
to get something that works for you, both in terms of sound and looks.

If at all possible, try some small, local specialist dealers. They
often have the best gear and the most knowledge and experience.

Big retailers like Best Buy and Circuit City usually have some good
speakers randomly mixed in with mediocre speakers, and another problem
in those stores is that the listening conditions are often pretty poor,
assuming the speakers are even hooked up correctly in those stores.

eBay is another source of all kinds of speakers, but it's risky to buy
speakers you haven't heard first. Also, sometimes people may sell
speakers and not even realize that something like a tweeter is blown;
I've seen that happen in private sales locally. It's better to shop in
person, IME.

Smaller, local audio and video stores will often have decent listening
rooms and have the speakers connected correctly, as well as having
experienced staff who can give you some guidance.
