I'm looking at plasma screens, and the 43" Pioneer Elite 920HD really
looks nice. The downside, on the one sample I've been able to find, is
playing DVDs.
I've noticed that scenes with lots of fine detail flicker as the camera
pans across. Also, colors look a little dithered/banded, which I haven't
noticed on Sony plasmas. I think this was using the component outputs on
the DVD player, not an upconverting player.
On the plus side, the brightness/color/contrast is really good. In
low-light scenes, I can see all the detail. On a lot of other plasmas
I've looked at, dark scenes just look black and there is no detail.
The screen is 1024 x 768, not 1280 x 768 or 1366 x 768 like the 50" and
bigger screens. Could the screen only being 1024 pixels wide cause the
flickering?
I also looked at a 50" pioneer (but I don't really have room for one
this big), and it had no flickering, but still had the dithered color.
The salesguy says that the 43" pioneer was just set up wrong, that it
shouldn't flicker. He says the dithering is due to it not being
calibrated, and if I go through the ISF calibration the dithering will
go away. He says that even though the 43" is only 1024 pixels wide, it
will look just as good as the 50", which is 1280 wide.
Anyone have a 43" pioneer? See any of the flickering/dithering I've
seen? Did the ISF calibration fix it?
Thanks.
