View Full Version : What to look for in a new video card...

I have to get a different video card to put in my system which has a
video-out connector on it so as to be able to send my SageTV programs to my
regular TV (instead trying to watch them on my just-not-bright-enough
computer monitor). So before I decide exactly which video card I want to
buy, I'm just wondering what additional video-card features I might consider
opting for while I'm at it, that could have an impact on my tv/video
capture, video editing, and PVR activities. For example, I've already
learned I might want to pay attention to what type of "feature connector"
is on a card, in case I ever want to lighten my CPU's chores a little in the
future by adding a dedicated video/mpeg decoder card. (My PVR setup does
have a minor problem in that video playback can sometimes become a bit
choppy under certain -albeit easy to avoid- circumstances.) But what else
might be of potential value to consider here? Although I demand a lot of
multi-tasking out of my machine, and I do like to dabble with Paint Shop Pro
9 (similar to Photoshop) as a passtime when I'm not watching my PVR recorded
programs, I'm not into animated computer games or CAD and the intensive
processing demands these place on a system. So am I correct in assuming
that paying a little more for extra GPU power/speed and extra amount/speed
of video memory on a video card is not going to result in any performance
impact on the computer activities as I've described here? Or am I mistaken
about this?

Thanks,

Ken

PS: I've got three TV tuners in my PC running under SageTV (PVR). But each
has its own hardware video-encoder... just no hardware video-decoders at
all.
