View Full Version : Is there a big difference between 5.1 and DTS sound
Im running a 5.1 sound system at the moment and am wondering is there a big
difference between this and DTS sound. What recommendations do you have for
a entry priced DTS system.

I'm afraid you haven't asked the right question. DTS can be
5.1.
5.1 = 5 channels of sound + a LFE channel. You can also
have other combinations e.g. 2.0, 4.0, 5.0, 6.1 etc.
Now DTS = Digital Theatre Sound so it is a codec. What I
"think" you want to know is what is the difference between
DTS and DD (Dolby Digital)
Full bit rate DTS is about 1/3 compression and DD is about
1/12 compression. Both are lossy formats i.e they throw
bits of information away. In an ideal World the less you
throw away the better the sound. Like MP3 codecs.
As far as a DTS system goes all you need is the decoder *IF*
you already have someway of running 5.1 speakers.
I hope this helps.

Yes the information helps. Thanks for the insight.

DTS is a very aggressive surround, you will definitely hear your surrounds
as opposed to DD where you need to check periodically to see if they are
still connected.

Hi Saus29,
Perhaps you would elaborate just a little bit here please?
While Alan is a little sceptical of your observation I will
give you the benefit of the doubt. What brings you to this
conclusion and do you have any data to back it up?
Cheers TT

what data? this is an ears perception only forum, otherwise directional
speaker wire would have you committed.
anywhoo, certain studios products bearing the dual format in sound options
have different characteristics in the surrounds, being what was outlined
above.

OK then can you name at least one title that this is evident
on (3 or 4 would be preferable) and I will do the
comparison of the rear channels and run it through some
spectral analyses.

Why even bother with the question. Fanboys don't need facts they just make
it up as they go along.

DTS has a better clarity of sound ( richer and fuller ) than DD5.1
IMEO (In my ears opinion))

That's because it is less compressed ;-)
