View Full Version : VGA transmitter
You will not find a wireless VGA transmitter that will satisfy you for
theatre quality video, at least none that I have seen. Why can't you run a
cable in the wall or ceiling?

Hi,
Basically I have a situation where I need to transmit the VGA signal across
the living room to the projector without a cable (I can't put a cable
through the wall and I can't hide it under the carpet, etc.. wooden floors)
...
I have looked at the following:
http://www.allthings.com.au/Catalogue/PC%20MAC%20APPLE/vga%20to%20video%20wireless%20Ultimate.htm
and it looks really nice because I can not only transmit the VGA but also
the rear speakers to the back...
Two problems haunt me.. One is that I run my linux box with a nonstandard
resolution (1280x720) because my projector is 16:9 .. does anyone know if
this transmitter will do this resolution??
Also, I have a wireless network set up in the same room.. will this affect
transmission!? ..
Any information appreciated especially where people have first-hand
experience with such transmitters

I don't think that the unit transmits VGA... what it does is convert vga to
"normal" video which is then transmitted and received at the remote end.
The transmit appears to have a "passthru" mode at the transmit end but
that's it. If you are expecting to transmit a "full vga" signal, then I
don't think this unit is what you are looking for.

yeh, I noticed that today as well... to be honest it doesn't need to
transmit raw VGA.. as long as the conversion is good then there isn't a
problem.. it's the resolution I was worried about

There isn't a decent wireless video transmitter on the market... not unless
you're willing to spend a significant amount of money.
Can you run Cat 5 cabling? You can transmit practically anything over Cat5.

I think the thing operates on 2.4 ghz which will "conflict" with things like
cordless phones. As Lucas Tam points out, I haven't heard of any operating
very well in terms of picture quality... what are you expecting to achieve??

Generally the quality should be comparable to RF video, like free to air TV.
The ones that transmit on 2.4GHz generally have a few channels (like most
similar freq. cordless phones, bluetooth devices, wireless LAN senders etc),
so you may find that flicking a switch on one or more appliances will help
you with less noise and more signal... the problem with a lot of 802.11 LANs
around is that they outputting a much higher power than regulations allow -
my local hospital puts out 4x the legal output and gives everyone else high
noise levels for kilometres around.
