What size widescreen TV do I need to equal my 4:3 45" Mitsubishi?

It depends on what you mean by "equal".

For the same width (36") you need about 42" diagonal.
For the same height (27") you need about 55" diagonal.

For the same area, a 16:9 screen's diagonal measurement should be 1.06
times that of a 4:3.

Thanks, Tom and Dennis.

That is exactly what I needed to know.

If/when I decide to buy a W/S, I don't want to lose my current 4:3
picture size.

Even though most TV programs are still 4:3 and the ones that aren't have
the "small" black bars (Enterprise, Stargate SG-1 etc) some of these
DVD's with the "big" black bars drive me nuts! I cannot stand watching a
movie that is only utilizing about 1/3 of my screen.
