View Full Version : HDCD-Compliance and HDMI inputs - How important are they for 2006-2010???

Howard, et al,
I note that you are enthusiastic about the Panasonic AE900U
Projectors . . .
Looking at the specs, the AE900 has HDMI inputs and very high
resolution (1920x1080p) capabilities but no mention of
HDCP-compliance. Shouldn't we be looking for ALL of these things
in a projector investment at the moment???? Am I right in
insisting that any projector (or high resolution PC display)
should have HDCD-Compliance to ensure that future multimedia
content will display in all of it's intended glory???? I am
finding them hard to find . . .
Many thanks,
Jim Kelly.

Unless players come out with hacks to disable HDCP (like it seems the
lg 9921 dvd player has), then it is VERY important.
HD DVDs (incl Blueray) are not supposed to be able to be displayed in
1080i over any non-HDCP compliant connection. Likewise the same applies
to upscaling DVD players (although a few brands apparently upscale over
component).
So (unless HDCP can be disabled) you will have to watch any HD DVD in a
non HD resolution unless using HDCP HDMI or DVI.
However, my understanding is that all HDMI connections are HDCP
compliant (although the HDMI specification doesn't in itself mandate
this).

Why is this even a question overt the next 3-5 years and hence the life of
your projector?
Have you actually looked at the copyright restrictions placed on HD-DVD/Blue
ray players?
Why would you even consider for a moment purchasing one?

The AE900 is HDCP compliant. it does not, however, proect an image at
1920x1080p. The highest resolution is 1920x1080i.

I have an AE900. It will take a 1080/24p input signal but its LCD panel
has a resolution of 1280x720. It is in fact HDCP compliant - my HD cable
box checks for HDCP compliance and it has no problems with the AE900.

IIRC, the manual claims 1920x1080p for DVD but 1920x1080i from a
PC . . .
Good to know that it is HDCP-compliant though. You think they'd
put that in the specs . . .
Cheers,
Jim

God points. I won't be spending any money on a player before the
technology is well accepted and titles readily available. BUT I
have purchased gear in the last 15mths that does not have HDMI
because I was unaware of it at the time . . . As consumers we
need to do our homework, it seems . . .

Thanks Fred . . . that's exactly what we needed to know! Any
comments about the unit??? Is it bright enough to tolerate a
'normal' amount of ambient light or does it need a blackened room
(say for an 100-110" diag image)?

You must mean HDCP, not HDCD which is an audio-encoding scheme.
