I am about to install a whole heap of PIR's and so forth in my house and I was just wondering about the standards used for the wiring of devices.

I have ordered some 6 core security wire, but it hasn't arrived yet so I don't know what colours it has, but I'm assuming they will be a standard set.

So what colours should go where?

I have 12v, Alarm contacts and Tamper.

Also is it normal to actually wire up the tamper switch, I can't see how anybody could get anywhere near it to tamper with it, without it triggering. Is is designed so the tamper circuit is always active even if the alarm is not armed?

Cheers

Hi Rohan

When i use to install alarm systems , i used red + black for 12vdc power

blue + while for alarm circuit, normally closed with a series resistor

green/ yellow (orange) for tamper........

Some alarm panels incorporate tamper implementation were you use 2 resistors and connect to one pair ..giving alarm +tamper(only 4 core required) .....The following panels from memory incorporate tamper implementation Genesis ,Challenger and Concept...

Oops missed part of your message...

Most installers from when i installed didnt connect tampers in a domestic install..
Personally i would connect them up ...Better if the panel has tamper implementation then you can programm the keypad to beep if the alarm is off if tamper occurrs...of course the same should be applicable if connecting all the tampers to a zone input.....The downside to having seperate tamper circuits and connecting them all in seirie to a zone input is if a tamper switch is faulty (intermittent) it will be a bugger to track down......
What alarm panel are you going to install???

Hi Frank,

Due to a reduction in crop from the money tree this year, I'm going to use my Thinkboxx, at least for the foreseeable future anyway.

I was thinking of doing the tamper through the contact with the 2 resistors trick, Thinkboxx supports this configuration.

The PIR's I ended up buying, have a Piezo screamer built in so I need the other pair to drive that.

Thanks for the info on the colours.

Cheers

Unless you have a PIR in the roof if the robber enters this way. he cuts all the PIR cables then jumps through the plaster. Hey presto NO alarm !!!

Tamper is also good to tell you that the rats in the roof have eaten through the cable. :)

Funny I used the same colour coding...

THe most important thing to do is write is some where and keep it some where you will know where it is !!!

If I put a PIR in the roof it would melt.

As you know, Ive got about an acre of dark Colorbond roofing. If anybody wants to know what hell is like, just climb into my roof on a 35 deg day, you'll soon know.

Charles

hence EOL resistors should be used
