If you are buying any goods from Betta Electrical or buying Centrex
Brand products, think again.

I bought a brand new Centrex 100L freezer from Betta Electrical at
Archerfield QLD on 25/07/2005 After using for two days I found that the
noise from the motor was unbearable, so I took it back to Betta
Electrical. However the Betta Electrical shop owner refused to take the
freezer back. He said I should contact Centrex Customer Care. His
attitute was also very rude.

I contacted Centrex Customer Care (in NSW) immediately and was told I
had two choices: (1) return it to the retailer, and (2) they can
arrange a technician to look at it, but I have to pay service fee if no
faulty was found. I asked her: "What is the definition for faulty? The
freezer is running but the problem is it's too noisy". She did not
answer my question, instead she gave me ABC Electrical's phone number
(Centrex's service agent in Brisbane) and suggested I speak to the
technician there. However the technician who answered my call said to
me he would call me back after talking to Centrex. He never called me
back. But anyway both Betta Electrical and Centrex treated me like a
football.

Next day I spoke to somebody at Customer Service of Betta Electrical
Head Office in Brisbane. He stated that the Betta Electrical is a
franchise business which doesn't have a warehouse. As a result he was
unable to replace the freezer or find the same product from other Betta
Electrical shops for me. He suggested I contact Department of Fair
Trading and Centrex.

I now realised how retailers and whole sellers/manufraturers joint
together to sell lemon and make dirty money.

Betta Electrical Archerfield QLD is located at 901-903 Beaudesert Road,
Archerfield. Ph 3277 8570. Its owner Mr Mucury Leong also owns and runs
Beep World (a factory second electrical shop) and a product services in
the same premises. Note: I'm not saying that he sells secondhand goods
or refurbished goods through his Betta Electrical outlet, although
these three shops share the same staff.

Following is somebody's post to a public forum in response to my post:

I came across your post while searching for Centrex website (I can't
find it if they have one).

My father and mother, who are retired, decided to purchase an
airconditioner for their kitchen after 50 years of not having one. As
you can imagine spending any amount of money when you are retired is a
concern as money is not easy to come buy.

My father went to a local electrical goods retailer in Kwinana W.A. and
spoke to the sales rep in depth about a wall mounted split system
suitable to the application. The salesman assure him that Centrex air
conditioner Dad was looking at was not only cheap, but reliable and as
quite as a mouse, in fact he said "it will be like being in a library.
The Centrex specifications said that the noise intensity at maximum
speed would be 51dB. My father was convinced as all the other split
system aircond. had similar specs and the salesman obviously helped
with that decision.

After forking out more money to have a professional install it, the
first flick of the switch was nothing but dissappointment. The noise
coming from the aircond. was like sitting behind a jet engine on take
off.

My Dad went to Dick Smiths and bought a dB meter and measure the sound
on low speed, it read 57dB. Now, dB's measure the intensity of sound to
a logorithmic value of 10. That means an increase of 6dB's will increase
the sound intensity 6 times. Most lawn mowers operate at about 70dB's.

After my Dad spoke to Centrex in NSW he got nothing but rhetorical
rubbish from a man that didn't have an incling of what my Dad was
talking about nor did it sound like he was a tradesman and nor was he
in least bit interested. Tuff sh** basically.

Fortunately Dad is getting somewhere with the retailer but it is a slow
process and summer is just around the corner.

I absolutley encourage everyone not to buy anything Centrex. What a
load of crap it is!!!!

Did you even ask about noise level before buying? The other guy below
did, so probably has a better case.

Bugger all in the way of specifications there though.

Get your facts right. 6 dB means 4 times. Plus how it is measured
makes a difference. Did he stick the sound pressure meter right up
against the aircon or hold it at 1 metre etc?

http://www.safetyline.wa.gov.au/institute/level2/course18/lecture54/l54_03.asp
says that "Conversational speech" is 60 dB, "Kerbside of busy road" is
80 dB and "Disco" is 100 dB. "30m from jet aircraft" is 140 dB and is
above the threshold of pain (130 dB).

http://www.nidcd.nih.gov/health/education/teachers/common_sounds.asp
says "Lawnmower, Food Blender" is 85-90 dB. "Washing Machine" is 78 dB
and "Refrigerator Humming" is 40 dB.

Panasonic reckon their cheapest cooling only split-system is 33 dB (on
High).

Hence if he was told that all air conditioners have the same sound
level, then he can take it back on that basis.

Centrex do in fact make STBs, TVs, and DVD players and recorders so it
isn't off-topic like you might think.

in Qld there is a cooling off period , contact consumer affairs which
should be 3 days , you registered a complaint in that time so I expect
you have the option of repair , replacement or refund if it doesnt
perform as described . If the shop owner claims otherwise being armed
with the truth means you should return the goods and reverse your visa
card immediately .

definitely a fair trading issue - how the bloody hell can you TEST the noise
level of a bloody freezer!!!!???

It is a fair expectation that it will have a certain db level and no more,
but I suppose the specs or advertising literature won't have any reference
to it.

got it home - don't like the din it makes - you should be able to contact
the store and return it immediately - end of bloody story - it isn't as if
you don't like the COLOUR FFS!

ok - tablet time for me

:)

good luck mate
