I have just purchased a Wintal 6.1 Home Theatre Surround Sound Amplified
Receiver. (Bloody great mouthfull)
Its to replace my old Phillips 5 channel (no Woofer) Surround Sound
Amp.
My wife had 2 weeks befoe bought me a set of speakers (Cobolt brand)
from The WareHouse (Clints).
The main speakers are slim tube type about a metre tall with similar
style but horizontaly inclined centre speaker with an amplied woofer.
The Woofer has the connections for 2 channel and 5.1 channel in, no
coax or optical and the connections out for the relevant speakers.
These are being sold now along with a DVD as a set.
I have connected the various speakers to the Wintal Amp and just run a
single connection from the sub woofer OUT on the Amp to the SW IN on
the woofer box.
It all seems to work ok based on the crappy room positioning of
everything.
So its el-cheapo all the way and rough-as-guts cobbling together.
I built a set of speaker box's years ago and they really shook the
house but we have added more furniture and they were big and bulky.
I know you can spend squillions on speakers and cables but what I got
will do but I was after some info on sub woofers like the amp and
enclosures etc.
I was going to look at articles in a well known electronics mag but for
what it would cost me to buy 3 year old back issues, I could go buy a
sub woofer and save time.
any sites for speakers/subs/ how they work and best way to use what you
have?

What is your budge and what do you want out of it? This is the primary
knowledge before we start making suggestions.

Budget is below $8.80 (the cost of Silicon Chip back issues).
you let your wife buy you speakers? and from the warehouse? how can you
possibly say "what you got will do"? :)
please go into a reputable hi-fi store and audition some systems using
your own cds or movies and I guarantee you'll no longer be satisfied
with what you've got...
even a cheap sony/panasonic micro unit would sound better than that
crap.
oh, and to answer your question, go to http://www.audioholics.com - it
has heaps of good advice on how to set up your system. hope this helps.
i'm not being nasty, I just want you to really enjoy your music and
movies!

Ok, lets qualify a few points, YES, she did buy and YES from Clints.
YES, it will do.
I am more that well aware this is pond bottom stuff but I dont have a
suitable 'sound' room to put better.
My wishlist is one day to have a 'HOME THEATRE ROOM' with a full wall
sized screen and a sound system to match BUT not in this house.
To me it would be sacrilidge and a plain simple waste of money to spend
what is needed to buy quality speakers etc.
TRUST ME, I want to but NO !!!!!
So in the meantime I will enjoy what I have and read up on what is
what, get a better understanding of which does what and WHEN I win the
$34 Mill on New Years Eve, LOOK OUT !!!!!
So its just the basics for now for my enlightentment.
I had an FM radio in the car when the only FM station in NSW was at
Ashfield (sydney)and was a sort of an amatuer run thing that played
light classical and similar as long as it was in stereo.
When I went to Sydney, on it went to the annoyance of wife and
children.
Bloody boring but it was in clear FM stereo.
And when MMM started I was able to receive it on the high spots around
my home area, and with front/rear speakers, FM heaven.
After growing up with AM, I do have an appreciation of how much better
sound is with even reasonable equipment.
So please bare with me for the time being.

It sounds as if you''re already quite aware of your equipment's limitations
and are quite knowledgeable enough, anyway here are some sites I always find
useful:

www.homecinemachoice.com
www.hometheaterhifi.com

EXT,
Thanks for those sites, I shall peruse with diligence.
When I looked at the Silicon Chip site for back issues, I only saw an
offer to supply the full year of articles on Sub Woofers hence my
comment on it being cheaper to buy a SW and to hell with reading.
Sorry if I caused any misunderstanding there.
While I also hope you do well in the NY lotto, I must be honest and
hope that I do better.
My Best Wishes to all Forum Members for Xmas and A Happy and Prosperous
New Year.
