Well folks - have looked and looked and it appears that the best plasma I
can find is the Fujitsu - I am sure there are better ones around but this
one seems to have the all round quality we are looking for...... others we
saw that seemed pretty good include
TEAC 42 inch Plasma (believe it or not!) - based on value for money and
watchable picture. ($1900 buy)
Samsung 42 Plasma
Schaub Lorenz LCD 32 inch - $3500
Loewe Xelos 37 inch LCD (?)
Toshiba 62 inch DLP Rear Pro (actually, thought it was stunning) - $6000
I know folks will want to rip these all apart and that's fine - we just
spent 3 weeks researching the different ones we could find and felt these
were the stand-outs. If I could convince the wife, we would get the Toshiba
as we have the space and in fact even a "hole"in a wall that would take it
with a few mm to spare..... but it looks like we will be going with the
Fujitsu - after we get down to Hi Tek in Northcote and check out the Samsung
plasma and Sony rear pro
Cheers
Steve
I have the 52" version of the Toshiba and am very happy with it. It's
actually not that deep (the 52" is about 30cm deep) so it fits in well
almost anywhere (except hanging on a wall). :)

Are you talking about the 50" or the 42"?
I would have to also vote for the 50" Fujitsu (not the 42") as well
(assuming that price is not a significant component to this decision).
I
The AVM II chip in the 50" Fujitsu makes excellent work of poor source
material, and the Panasonic Glass in the panel displays fantastic
blacks. The 42" Fujitsu is not as good with the blacks, presumably
because of its use of Hitachi glass. On good HD material, there is not
really much difference between the fujitsu and the panasonic (which I
think is its closest competition - until I see a well set up Pioneer
506).
BUT the new panasonic panels (500a both 42" and 50") are not too far
behind and their pricing is much better.
Be aware that Fujitsu seems to have just dropped the price of its
screens last week.
The new NEC panels are due out early Jan.

I wouldn't rip any of those apart, but I would certainly urge you to
consider the NEC as well. As scalpel mentioned, the new range is out in Jan
and they will doubtlessly be awesome.
