I see a lot of receivers support 7.1 sound. Given that there are no
DVDs which do, I'm forced to wonder...what's the point?

These receivers using special algorithms to extract the 7th channel - and
it works quite well.
It basically smooths out some of the harshness from a 7.1 setup.
However, for most people, I'm sure they'll be happy with a 5.1 or 6.1
setup.

This wouldn't have anything to do with BluRay, would it? What surround
systems will it use? Is there some 7.1 surround system that BluRay will
have, and receiver manufacturers are just sort of hedging their bets?

I don't think there is a 7.1 format defined yet ... so whatever receivers
that are currently out now won't decode 7.1 material.

That is the question my friend.
IMO Discrete channels are far better than 'processing'.

I donno.. it would seem that it would be more natural to hear a sound go
across the back rather then from one side to another.. But I have to admit,
I am putting a 5.1 set up in now myself.
