Hi, am considering a Pioneer receiver versus a Yamaha. The Yamaha has
audio delay. I have never had a problem with audio sync before, but I
am redoing everything. I wanted to run my DVD component out to my
Panasonic PT-AE700U front projector and my audio via fiber/optical to
the receiver. Would that cause a delay? I also read where someone
said I might want the audio delay if I ever used a scaler. What is a
scaler? Thank you.

It takes longer to process a digital video signal than to process

a digital sound output.....

A digital video scaler is the chip that processes/converts the video
signal to

the proper or desired viewing format. The good 1080p HDTV sets use

the weave chip set function rather than simple bob for deinterlacing.

Thank you.

So is audio delay something that should influence my receiver purchase?

No. What you're describing is a common configuration.

I've never used a scaler that caused the video signal to lag behind the
audio. Such a product would be hard to sell.

I run a projection room in which signals are split and routed to a
variety of devices, analog and digital, including scalers, before being
displayed or recorded. If a scaler caused a delay, it would be a
serious problem. Doesn't happen.
