View Full Version : Samsung DVD player: HDMI audio not supported?

I just bought a Samsung DVD-HD845 player. Here's how I have things connected:

DVD player to TV via HDMI cable (for video)
DVD player to Receiver via Coaxial cable (for audio; my receiver does
not have HDMI)

It looks and sounds great, but whenever I play a DVD, the DVD player
repeatedly reminds me "HDMI Audio Not Supported." Why would it do this?
I tried turning on the TV's speakers, and lo and behold it isn't
getting any audio over the HDMI cable. HDMI carries both audio and
video, so why would the DVD player not support it?

About the only thing I can think of is, since my TV doesn't support
Dolby Digital or DTS, it is somehow telling the DVD player to disable
the audio output over the HDMI cable. If this is the only reason, then
I'm cool with it. I planned on getting a new receiver anyway, one which
*does* have HDMI.

My question is, if I do get this receiver (a Yamaha HTR-5990, that's
the one I'm looking at), would the DVD player *still* give me this
annoying message, or would the HDMI audio work in this case (since the
5990 obviously supports HDMI audio and video)? I don't want to blow 900
bucks on a receiver unless I know the DVD player will transmit audio
*and* video to it, via HDMI.

After skimming through the Samsung manual, this is what it looks like
to me. I don't have one of these units, so maybe someone else will
chime in.
