View Full Version : Do I have to use the RCA audio connections if I'm using coax?

I have the digital coaxial out on my DVD player going to my receiver. Do I
have to hook up the red/white RCA's as well?

Would any disc I put into the player (be it DVD, CD, or say a bootleg DVD of
an old TV show) be able to get audio with only the digital coaxial?

Thanks.

Michelle's answer is of course correct.

It's worth noting that if you want to send audio from your DVD player back
out from the tape outputs of your digital receiver (for dubbing, say, or as
a pass-through to an amp driving speakers in another room) you may need to
use the player's analog outputs *in addition* to the digital.

This is because most receivers won't do the digital-to-analog conversion
necessary to make this happen, but most players output a stereo analog
signal at all times, in addition to the digital audio output.

On my system, I have only a digital connection, and I can sound every type
of sound. Based upon my experience, only the digital (coaxial or optical) is
needed. I believe the only exception might be six channel analog, such as
SACD or DVD-Audio.
