I recently purchased a Samsung 42" plasma (PS42S5H) but each time I
switch between channels on my Sky+ box, I have to manually tell the TV
how to display the image - 4:3 or 6:9. I found that I was constantly
switching between aspect ratios to get the TV to display the image
correctly (not squeezed or squashed) so I contacted the manufacturer
via their web-site. Samsung initially told me that this was a defect
and I had the TV replaced by the retailer. The replaced TV behaves in
exactly the same way. Samsung have now told the retailer that the TV is
behaving correctly after all and that they were previously mistaken
about telling me that it was a defect. In other words, if you want to
watch multiple channels with different aspect ratios (some wide format
and others 4:3), then you have to manually switch each time you switch
channels.
This is an extreme annoyance and I'm wondering if this is standard
behaviour for wide-screen TVs. Should expensive TVs automatically
adjust for the aspect ratio? Do they in general?
