Howdy all.

I need some advice on buying speakers. I'm setting up a home theatre
system to enjoy DVD's and music. I dont need state of the art gear. The
receiver I'm currently looking at is the Pioneer VSX-815 (or something
similar) but thats not the issue here. Speakers are by far going to be
the hardest purchase. So far I've had recommended to me Accusound
OM600's, a Welling speaker package and a DTX speaker package (both the
last at JB Hi-Fi). From this you may gather that I do not have
thousands to spend......but for a decent and affordable speaker package
I'm will to go a little extra (but under $2000).

Any suggestions would be appreciated....

Cheers....

Hi,
Try some of the great Aussie speaker manufacturers they generally offer
great value for money. A full list is available here;
http://www.htcentral.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=1167
Accusound is one of these brands, Thornton has some association with
them so perhaps he is a little biased, but they are very good speakers.

Try and find some of the Australian brands at a local store and
audition them. I really would steer clear of the JB Hifi crowd goes as
far as recommendations, but let your ears be the judge.

Thanks for the feedbacks guys.......I know I gotta get out and listen.
How about Dali or Jensen speakers? Worthy of consideration? Another
question,
if a speaker package does not include a sub-woofer is that a problem or
can I get by without one for awhile. I only ask after browsing a local
retailer's pamphlets........they sell Dali's and Jensen's packaged with
receivers but no mention of a sub.....

Cheers!

I work for Harvey Norman myself and I bought a set of Accusound
Delta's, Delta 895 towers, Bi-Pole rears, just going to get the sub
next, and I can tell you the sub will blow you away.

When turned up, parts of the electrical section a fair distance away
will rattle. Best bang for your dollar sub you'll get.

I'm running mine off an Onkyo 501 (which is tooo small) however I can
still make the room rattle without a sub, they are great speakers. I'm
eventually going to purchase a Sherwood Newcastle R965 which'll really
make these speakers sing :)

Btw bargain the price down on them if you can, I got mine (at staff
price) for $690, thanks too a little stuff up on the order, however
cost on the speakers (without sub) is around $800-900 roughly (that's
with the Bi-Pole rears. RRP Is about $2000-2499

Subs have a $1299 price tag, but remember they only cost $550 inc gst

Only criticism I have is the centre speaker is just a tad too quite,
however nothing that changing the channel levels didnt fix. I'm
probably going to order the larger Delta Centre speaker, but ill do
that when I get my Newcastle.

If you're looking for some nice HT speakers - try the Mission range.
There are the m3 and m5 series. I was auditioning each of them and I
actually preferred the sound of the m3 series. Couple them with a
Yamaha RX-V series receiver and you'll be onto a winner there...

Try HiFi Supermarket if there's one near you for good prices on Mission
and Yamaha stuff...

I suggest go to a specialist HiFi dealer with a listening room and audition
as many speakers as you can side by side because everyone's tastes are
different.

I'm looking to get a set of bookshelves myself, and I've been everywhere in
Sydney auditioning brands such as B&W,NHT,Dynaudio,Boston,Krix,Tannoy - the
ones that came out on top (for me) were the Krix's,Bostons, and Tannoys (in
that order)

Well, I'd advise you really think about what you want and what you'll
spend. If you are going to get a sub, then you don't need big tower
speakers at the front. If I were you I'd go to a good store and get
them to recomend some stuff just out of your price range and then try
to get it cheaper. You in sydney? If so you defiantely need to get to
a Quality Hi Fi store (I can recomend a couple if you want).

You need to listen to it before you buy...

Consider some of the complete speaker systems, The yearly awards has
the best systems, and they are probably the people to trust.

It is hard becuase there are so many people out there doing quality
stuff.
Ebay has some great stuff you wont see in any stores, but consider that
you won't be able to listen to it before you buy unless they go out fo
their way to impress you (or they manufacture close by).

Personally, if you are serious about your sound, you'll meed a little
more cash. If you'll be happy with a good system, then get a matched
system (see your local HiFi Dealer).

I think "Ueno" has said it all, A lone voice of reason in fact..
Go round the specialist dealers, and stay away from hardly normal, Retro
fusion
and all the other department stores. There all selling crap. and we all know
the rorts that hardly normal go on about with Monster Cables.
If you visit a Hi Fi Store they will allow you to addition there stuff ,
advise you on what will suit your home and your pocket, and they don't sell
washing machines, and fridges, so they know there stuff.
There's a lot of good package deals going, you could also consider used,
or demo stuff, Again your Hi Fi shop will advise you, You could also
consider speaker kits, from WES, VAF and a few others. If your in Sydney
wonder down to Audio Connection, or Len Wallis Audio. But don't buy at the
first place you look, you can always come back. And they will all talk deals
for cash money.

And for Christ sake stay away from white vans in carparks.

If you are handy the kit is the way to go, proven sound quality for a
fraction of the price. build a mdf box and paint it black and save 75%.
I have built several good speakers and saved a bundle of cash.
especially with subwoofers

And be prepared to listen to a lot of brand bashing from the salesmen. It's
amazing on how many negative things a salesman would say about a brand that
they don't carry when you mention the words 'I've been auditioning brand
XXX.'

Keep in mind that they would almost always try to push the brand that they
carry - in the end, let your ears be the judge!
