View Full Version : Wierd problem with Denon receiver

Hi all,

I have a Denon receiver (cant remember the exact name right now, I think its
AVR2803 or something like that) which I've had for going on 4 years now and
over the past few months its been acting kind of wierd. The receiver does
(used to do....) Dolby Digital, DTS, PLM, PLMII, basically all the standard
audio APIs and last year I had no trouble with it, but over the past six
months both my DVD player and my Xbox no longer seem to be able to send it a
DD5.1 or a DTS signal. If I set either of those systems to DD or DTS I get
absolutely no audio coming out of my speakers and only when I turn off those
options do I get audio which my receiver classifies as PLMII which just
doesn't sound very good IMO.

Now normally I'd just say a few chips in my receiver fried or something, but
the wierd thing with this is that I *can* get my receiver to play DD5.1
through my Playstation2 on the handful of games that support it. All three
systems are connected by optical cables, and all three systems used to be
able to play in those formats. I've already tried connecting the PS2's cable
to the DVDs / Xboxes optical input (incase somehow the plug in the receiver
was defective) and that made no difference so the problem isn't related to
the input ports.

Does anyone have any clue what could be going on?.... alternatively, can
anyone suggest a good receiver under 1k$ in case I'd have to upgrade :o)?

TIA

Hey Wurm. Have you tried hooking your xbox up to a different receiver to see
if you can get DD5.1 working? Maybe its a problem with the xbox's optical
cable. Alternatively, you could "borrow" an optical cable from FutureShop.

For DD 5.1 or DTS input to a Audio Receiver to work....

The DVD audio out must be set to Bit stream.... Not PCM on the DVD
unit...
and you must use a Digital Co-Ax or Digital optical cable between
DVD digital audio out and Receiver digital audio in.....

Best way to check things out is with a Home THeater Tune up
DVD that 'offers' both DD 5.1/6.1 and DTS test/play
selections...

Tune up Audio/video DVD About $25 each....

Question: Doesn't the Denon have DD and DTS indicator lights in the
display? Do the light?

Yup, thats all set, I'm using optical's for the xbox and DVD player. When I
set the DVD player to bitstream I simply get no audio at all, same as when I
enable DTS on the xbox, all sound goes away.

Yeah, I ordered the AVIA one this weekend and it should arrive sometime this
week, hopefully it'll help me diagnose this issue.

thanks for the reply!

yeah it does and no the lights dont turn on :(. I also have a text readout
on the front of the receiver which used to properly display the type of
signal I was getting and now its always on PLMII

thanks for the reply!

Hey Wurm, I have a REAL Home theater system. As well, I have a copy of
AVIA, if ever you want to borrow it. Did you get the issue sorted out?

I have a panasonic xr50 receiver, Athena as-p4000 sub, Athena As-F1.2's,
As-c1, AS-B1, AS-R1s. My xbox is hooked up to my sony kp46wt520 hdtv via the
montster component cables w/ monster optical cable. Do you have a direct
email address that I can email you at? I'm in the west island and would be
willing to try to help a fellow Xbox player out ;-)

Hey there Dan,

well crap on a stick, I finally get off my ass and order my own copy of AVIA
and now I find out I could have borrowed one ;o). yeah, you can mail me at
work at 'pforan' on the L3 side.

and strangely enough, apart from the receiver, we have the exact same
speaker setup :). I'm gonna be borrowing my buddies xbox tonite to see if I
can get that one to give me proper audio, heck, mine used to, maybe this is
a freaky case where both my xbox and DVD player (which has always been a
little buggy) both stopped working and my receiver is fine..... after all,
they both didn't crap out in this regard at the same time, my DVD player
stopped working a few months before the xbox did. If im still at a loss, I'd
gladly accept a hand from ya :), the best test would be to get another
receiver from someone (or bring my dvd player / xbox to them, wiring a
receiver sucks in a tiny 3.5 apt)

anyway, chat w/ ya soon.... BTW.... do you game on xbox live at all?
