View Full Version : LCD TV/monitor uneven backlight?

While looking at a dell 20-inch LCD monitor (actually I looked at two of the
same model), I notice the brightness is somewhat uneven in different parts
of the screen when displaying a solid color. There are patches that are
slightly darker. I think this is due to the uneven distribution of the
different fluorescent backlights.

Aren't there better technologies to distribute backlight? What about LCD TV
that are larger, say 30-inch, wouldn't they have an even harder time making
the backlight uniform, since they probably need to have more seperate bulbs
to cover the larger area?

"Light leakage" affects LCD worst of all. But, to the extent that you
mentioned, it's more likely a factory defect. And yes, it happens to
larger sizes just as easily. What a shame.

The Dell 2005fpw is know to have bad backlight leakage. Its a known manuf.
problem. However, since they are cheap, ppl. still buy them and Dell
apparently doesn't care. The 20" Apple cinema display uses the same panel,
but doensn't have backlight problems. It really depends on the manuf.
process and design.

Dell makes *some* good products. The 24" 2405fpw is of very good quality and
has an excellent price to boot!
