View Full Version : Help! My X-10 system is posessed

I have an X-10 system made up of SwitchLinc switches & KeypadLinc
controllers. There is also a CR134 coupler-repeater attached to both legs of
the AC in the circuit breaker box
(http://www.act-solutions.com/pdfs/PCCInst/cr134_instr.pdf).
I live in an apt. building in NYC. The system has worked flawlessly for 2
years. I don't ever think I had a singe false on/off. Recently the system
has gone haywire, with lights turning on (not sure if they ever go off) by
themselves. This happens especially in one particular room on both switches
in that room, but also happens with other switches in the apt.
I purchased a $10 Appliance Switch at RS and set it to one of the codes in
the particularly bad room. To my amassment it will always turn itself on
after a minute or two of being switched off. My guess is that there is a lot
of 'noise' on the AC, and the cheepo RS switch is doing a much inferior job
of filtering. I tried different house codes, but still had same problem.
I next turned off ALL the circuit breakers in the apt except the 'bad' room
to eliminate the possibility of the 'noise' coming from any of my
eqpt/appliances, and still the RS switch turned itself on.
I repeated experiment above, now turning off all breakers including 'bad
room' and leaving on a different breaker. RS switch still turned itself on.
I removed the CR134, and still had the problem.
It look to me like the noise is coming from outside the apt. Is this
possible? How can I filter it?
Any other explanations for the problem, tests, or ways to correct it would
be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Are the appliance and lamp modules having the same trouble ?
Are all the lamp modules switching ON at the same time or only one (if
several located in the same room) ?
It's just to try to determine if it's a correctly sent LIGHT ON signal or a
noisy signal (if light ON, all the light should be triggered by the command,
but not the appliance module).
Did you plugged recently a new electical device (TV, computer, other...).
X10 was designed in late 70 and doesn't like "modern" power switching supply
(most of them are used in electronics now like digital camera sector
adaptor, laptop, low voltage halogene light, etc...) ?
I had during few days this kind of symptoms. Adding a repeater solved it
(it's useless in your case, you already own one, but did you checked that it
is still worked fine (double led blink, no led error lighted ?).
Hope it helps

He's in an apartment building. Anyone else in the building could be the
source of the trouble. Unless he has access to the breaker panel and could
install a filter there's not much hope. That and little or nothing can be
done to block any RF signals that might be getting sent from someone else
also using X-10 transmitters. He could change to a different house code in
hopes of 'avoiding' other RF remotes.
But as for line noise there's not much that can be done if it's coming from
other residences in the building unless he can have equipment added to the
breaker panel (and I wouldn't hold out hope of that happening)

Since you apparently have access to your service panel, a whole house
noise block might solve your problem. Before that was available I
managed to attenuate a neighbor's wireless intercom with a Leviton #6289
across the hot legs in the panel. Have any of your neighbors had a baby
recently? Also, try changing house codes. What would be best is if you
had an ACT004 or Monterey Tester to see what's on the powerline in terms
of noise and signal. Are you using an HA program with a logging
feature? That will tell you if the commands are real or the operations
are being induced by something else. Also, are there any new high
current devices like AC units or elevator motors recently installed?
Lastly, is the apartment served with split single phase service (also
called 2 phase by some) or 3 phase service?

When my x-10 system starts doing weird unexplained lights on, lights
out etc. I unplug the computer module (cm-11a, I think) and take the
batteries out. Let it rest for awhile then put batteries in it and put
the programmed stuff back on it from the software.
I don't know how all the haywire stuff gets in there but this works
for me.

UPDATE:
Thanks all who posted. I believe that I have a 3-phase electrical system. I
have no computer automation connected, just Keypad-Linc controllers.
As several people suggested, the RS test module was having problems with the
load I was switching. I connected a standard light bulb, in standard socket
and it stopped switching on every few minutes.
I am still having problems with lights changing states once or twice a day.
I disconnected the CR134 repeater and have not had the problem for 2 days
now.
Any thoughts on if the amp-repeater has gone bad (it has worked flawlessly
for 2 years), or if it is amplifying preexisting noise. Short of swapping
out the CR134
I do need the CR134 to be able to 'hit' all the rooms from every controller.
Thanks

Please see my 'update' under my original post.
> Are the appliance and lamp modules having the same trouble ?
I only have the one 'test' appliance module
> It's just to try to determine if it's a correctly sent LIGHT ON signal or
a noisy signal
It is never ALL the lights. It is usually 1 or both of the lights in a
specific room (same room as RS 'test' appliance module). The RS unit has
been falsely triggered too.

No, we were away on vacation when the problems started.

Find out for sure if you have 3 phase wiring. The CR134 won't work
properly if you do. Unless you're in a large building you probably don't
but it's worth finding out.

It is a large 47 floor building. The CR134 has been working great for 2
years. I had tried MANY other repeaters and NONE of them worked in my
application.
This from the Smarthome link:
"Model #4822AC is for locations where there is three-phase electrical
service. This may also be described as 120/208 VAC and is commonly found in
commercial buildings, apartments and condominiums. The 4822AC (for
three-phase power) is compatible with A10 powerline control protocol
(sometimes used in commercial building automation). Manufacturer's part
number CR134."

Sorry, my mistake - I was thinking about the 234 which is the single
phase version I have. You could have the same failure that I had with my
234 which is the power diodes burning out. Disconnect the unit and
examine the two power diodes that are soldered in series and raised off
the board. New units have a heat sink installed on these. If they are
toasted and crumble to the touch you've found your problem. If you try
to replace them yourself be sure to use high heat solder or else the
heat will melt the connection. Smarthome may be able to arrange a repair
with ACT. I paid $49 to have mine fixed.

I'll be damned, it works.
I was having the exact same problem. A few weeks ago whenever I turned any
appliance/lamp off, about 50% of the time, within a minute it would turn
back on. There was no detectable stray AC or RF signals coming in and
local control was disabled on the modules.
Unplugging the CM11a for a bit seems to have fixed it.
Thanks,

It's a well known issue with the CM11a. They can lock up the whole
system. I don't know what causes it, but it seems to happen most
frequently in "larger" installations.
I had one some years ago that would lock up on a daily basis.
I went to a class at Electronic House Expo a few years ago on "creating
reliable x10 installations".
The first point was: Don't use X-10 Inc's products. The instructor then
talked about the CM11a issue.
The second point was to always put in a coupler/repeater.
