You might try looking at Universal Powerline Bus, UPB. You can see the
products, including appliance modules, at www.webmtn.com and buy them
at www.digitalavnew.com. UPB is proving to be an extremely reliable
alternative to X10. It's pretty new, so pricing is still higher than
X10, but the performance is great.

I had a question similar to the original poster.
Unfortunately, the wall switches only handle 120V incandescent loads, not
flourescents or motors or 240VAC Line-Line loads. Darn!

You can still use UPB. Use the I/O module
(http://www.webmtn.com/products/productDetails.php?id=17) to control up
to two Elk 9100s
(http://www.homeautomationnet.com/shopping/shopexd.asp?id=624) which
switches 240V loads. For the flourescent lights, you can use an
appliance module, controlled outlet, or switch (the PCS UPB switches
can be set for on/off only mode).

Thanks anyway, but the Elk 9100 responds to X-10, leaving me vulnerable to
unintended operation. Furthermore, I would have to do additional work to
provide local (manual) control.

Thanks, I did not see the on/off only mode feature described on the web site,
and the specifications in the data sheet note the "Load Type" as
"Incandescent lighting". See for example:

The Elk 9100 was just an example. You can use a UPB I/O module to
control many different 240V relays with dry contact input. Local
control of these is a simple momentary pushbutton.
The Web Mountain switch you mention does not have the on/off mode. They
do have a relay switch in the works (1Q05 I believe). The PCS switch
that I mentioned can be set either as a dimmer or on/off only for
flourescent lights or appliances. Check www.pulseworx.com for their
line of UPB products.

Yes, the pusleworx switches could work for 120VAC loads. Thanks!

The Elk 9100 was just one example. You can use the UPB I/O module to
trigger any 240V relay switch with contact closure inputs.
The Web Mountain UPB switch you mention may not have the on/off mode.
The PCS UPB switches do, though.
