View Full Version : WideScreen DVD Recorders

Friends of mine have just purchased a Canon digital camera which has a
16x9 widescreen mode. They have also purchased an LG RH7521 DVD
recorder, which has firewire input, so in theory they should be able to
connect their movie cam to the DVD recorder and transfer their
widescreen home movies to disc.
But will this work?
Does the LG DVD recorder actually record in widescreen??
I remember a recent thread here that seemed to indicate WS DVD
recorders were very rare. Has this changed?
Thanks in advance for any thoughtful input.

NO DVD Recorders will record in 16:9 with the exception of the latest SONY
model.
I cant personally confirm that the Sony does; because I have a Pioneer, but
I e mailed a question to Sony support
asking if the RDRHX900 will record in widescreen and below is their answer.
Thank you for your enquiry.
The RDRHX900 will record in 16x9 on DVD-R/RW discs and the HDD.

Until they bring out a DVD recorder with a digital tuner inside, they
are a waste of money and no more than glorified VHS machine.

Panasonic DMR-E100H.
I have recorded thousands of hours of DigitalTV in 16:9.
Copied to DVD-Rs and played back on many different brand DVD Players, all
play back perfectly at 16:9.
As far as I know "IfoEdit" will only tell you if the DVD's flags are set,
that is of no interest to me, for the purpose that I bought and use my DVD
Recorder 16:9 works perfectly.

I have a Pioneer DVR720H DVD recorder that records in 16:9 mode from a
Sony Handycam DCR-HC90E without a hitch. The Pioneer records in 16:9
mode from a digital set top box as well.

I have to agree with you there. I wouldn't consider buying a dvd recorder
without a digital tuner.
HDD recorders are also a waste of money. Although they do have intergrated
digital tuner. I have been told they are not able to record from external
sources to the internal hdd. (IE) satellite decoder, vhs, video camera etc.
And cost just as much or more as a dvd recorder.

Check the recording with Ifoedit and you will find NONE of your recordings
on your Pioneer are 16:9 (widescreen)
They will ALL be 4:3

What he means is: yes it will record and play back ok, but you're only
recording a squashed image which can stretch out to fill a 16:9 screen.
It's not "proper" 16:9 as you're not recording the extra picture
information you get on a real widescreen signal.
It still looks ok though. :)

Say what? All DVD recorders (including the Pioneer) record at full
resolution 16:9 (if that's the ratio chosen), except of course when
recording at the lowest levels of dubbing quality.
There is however an issue whereby the widescreen flag is not set correctly
on most DVD recorders. This means that if you're watching a 16:9 recorded
program on a 4:3 TV it will not correctly unsquash the image but that has
nothing to do with the recorded resolution. These recordings will look fine
on a widescreen TV and you can always transfer them to a PC and just
corrrectly set the flag using IFOedit.

Hey guys.
Here is the ORIGINAL question from the original poster.
"Does the LG DVD recorder actually record in widescreen."
By that I presume he means "Widescreen" which is 16:9
So the answer is NO.
You record a widescreen image (on any dvd recorder) from a widescreen 16:9
source and play that on a
4:3 tv the figures will look tall and skinny.
You do it.
Set your digital set top box to output 16:9, record it and then play that
back on a 4:3 tv set.
Everything will look tall and skinny because you have recorded a 16:9 image
in 4:3 format.
So to the original poster. Your widescreen image will look tall and skinny
when you play it back on a 4:3 tv set,
AND a widescreen tv also.
None of these other posters have actually recorded a 16:9 widescreen image.
They are probably recording a 4:3 image which from their set top box.

Are you positive? I'll have to do a comparison ...
There's no way of "choosing" the aspect ratio for recording (at least on
the Pioneers) - all it sees is a 4:3 signal.
Either way, you still get good results.

I have an LG DVD recorder - in the DISK SETUP menu set DISK ASPECT to 16:9.
It is true that WS flagging is rare, but LG and Sony do seem to support it.

Yeah its amazing the number of people with digital STBS and WS TV's who
either 1)use the built in analogue tuner, stretching widescreen but thinking
they are getting digital signal or 2)have a digital STB but the aspect
output at 4:3

What are you talking about? All DVD recorders can record either 16:9
widescreen (if you have a 16:9 set) or you can record in 4:3 ratio (if you
still have a regular set). All of these settings are in the setup menu of
each and every DVD recorder from day one.

That's why there is also the 4:3 setting. Do you actually own a DVD-recorder
and have you read the manual?

PVR's (hdd recorders with digital stb) are the best alternative
available at the moment (bar the toshiba HD recorder)
And yes none that I am aware of will record external sources since they
don't have any A-D converters. (They are just recording straight
digital bit streams) But if you want HQ recording of your free to air
tv their the best way.
I never saw the point in dvd recording when your just recording
analogue, seems like a waste of DVD's potential to me.
The only real compromise is get a DVD recorder and run a STB into it,
what's worse though is majority of DVD recorders are normally composite
or s-video recording, although there are some with Component In.
The Pioneers also have the 16:9 aspect setting - but I think you'll find
it's for playback, not recording.

Why the hell would you want to? You only have limited space on a HDD anyway.
It's only a watch and delete format.
If you want to store and archive on permanent media like DVD etc then look
elsewhere. For recording shit off TV a PVR is perfect. When was the last
time you really needed a permanent archive of something on TV?
