Hello all,
I own a Sony trinitron model KV-36FV310. Date manufactured 8-03. About
a month ago I've noticed that the top and bottom right hand corners are
green. I have no speakers near the unit. I called a TV repair guy in my
area. He attached a device on the back of the unit and he said the
"gausse chip" was bad . Giving unstable numbers and the "CRT board"
needed to be repaired.
he said the repair would cost $350.00 for parts plus his labor and he
needed to take the unit to his shop to do the repairs.
Does this sound right?
Regards,
-Tom

Yes, but he probably could have degaussed the screen manually in two
minutes. The TV might need degaussing again in two years, but at least it
wouldn't cost $350. I bought a degausser some years ago and it cost only
about $35.

Shouldn't the TV have a degausser built into it? I have a similar problem
with a new set and have already swapped it out for a new set once when I
thought it was defective. Problem remains.
No, there isn't anything electrical anywhere near this thing!

do you have an unshielded center channel speaker sitting on top
of it?
Nope! No speakers, no other electronics, nuthin! I'm testing it sitting on
a wooden bench in the middle of a room!

Ok $350.00 for a "Gauss Chip", (which simply doesn't exist) and
piddling on the crt board is definitely rip. Unless your TV is like
200 miles out of Town or something? Or Buddy needs to make bail?
Sheesh.
Should be about a $110 - $130 dollar repair to replace the positor,
resolder the crt board, and degauss the tube.
Go here http://www.globalsemi.com/search.aspx and type positor in the
search field, keep in mind this is supposed to be your "degauss chip".
Also playing around with a degausser and NOT knowing what you are doing
can permanently ruin the tube.
