View Full Version : Progressive scan for DVD makes picture dull?

I own a projector, and when I watch a DVD with progressive scan off the
picture is noticably very bright and sharp. When I turn progressive scan
'on' the picture is just dull by comparison. I don't understand this, isn't
progressive scan a good feature? I want to make use of the progressive scan
feature, but not if it makes the picture dull.

One more reason why I'm confused is because I am currently playing a video
game for the ps2 that supports 480i, and it also allows you to turn
progressive scan on. When I have progressive scan on in my game it does the
opposite of what it does to the DVD. It makes everything seem sharper and
brighter.

Also, what exactly does progressive scan do? What is it supposed to do to
the picture?

Thanks,
Brad

your tv probably does a better job of the conversion than you dvd player and
the ps2 does the conversion equal to or better than the tv. Think that's it.

scratch my post concerning this. I'm not familiar how it's handled with a
projector.

The electronics are the same, only the display is different. You gave
good advice; just play it the way it looks best. Some projectors have
very sophisticated scan conversion, carefully matched to the display.
If the projector does a better job than the DVD player, he should do
the conversion in the projector.

The PS2 480p output is not converted from anything, it is a native 480p
output. It is not surprising that it looks good.

My Infocus 4805 has a top of the line Faroudja chip in it and does a great
jop dealing with interlaced signals and scaling etc etc. However, I feed
it with a 480P signal from my HTPC via DVI and bypass the Faroudja. What I
get out, is every pixel on the DVD - pixel mapped to the screen. No more, no
less. I'm not surprised his 480P looks so good, I know I like mine a whole
lot. :)
