After much research and consideration, I am going to buy a projector, home
theatre setup and wonder if anybody would like to share their thought,
opinions before I take the plunge.

I just received my Panasonic AE700 and it is brilliant. 16:9, 1280x720, LCD
(no rainbows, good for me). Good long throw lens allows me to project onto a
96" screen with the projector shelf mounted behind me and 5.6m from the
screen.
Using a Momitsu upscaling DVD player, fantastic.

I had read all the negative comments on avsforum about black levels,
vertical banding etc, and am now convinced that you would have to be very
picky indeed to complain. And with mine I havent even tweaked or filtered
it yet, so I am expecting even better once that is done.
Talk to Doug at Peninsula Home Theatre www.penhometheatre.com.au great
service fantastic to deal with.

Any other questions, let me know. Also, I have done about 2 years research
and procrastinating before I bought this unit.
I even had the wife saying "for fucks sake just buy one!"

And why would you see rainbows? It's LCD technology. Doesn't happen.
Period. Should have went with DLP in my opinion but hey enjoy it
nonetheless.

As I have said before, part of my business is in hiring projectors and I
have a fair range, so I am not biased as they all cost me money to maintain.
DLP is not as sharp as LCD and never will be due to it's technology.
However, for my own private home theatre I have chosen the Panasonic AE-700
as it blitzes everything else including the overpriced and highly rated Sony
HS50. For your info in case you missed my post from a couple of months ago
here it is.

"I'm used to getting flamed in here because I speak what I class as unbiased
comments. For starters I have owned a Sony HS50 (paid almost $4,650) for my
preview cinema in one studio and I have just last week purchased the AE700
for the other preview cinema in our other studio in another city. Yes I have
put them side by side and whilst the Sony is crisp I can easily see the
Panna is crisper, cheaper and a far better buy. At the end of the day,
whilst I am Sony through and through with my production business and
absolutely loathe Panasonic broadcast cameras, with these 2 projectors I
give the Sony 7 out of 10 and the Panna 9 out of 10. As for what you want to
believe, that's up to you."

No.... I didn't say I saw rainbows with the LCD technology. I implied
(probably not quite clearly enough) that the reason I bought an LCD was
that DLP rainbows or flickering etc give me a headache.

I must admit that a DLP have been a better bet but the ones that I could
afford didn't have three chips or very fast colour wheels.
So I was kind of stuck. LCD for me until three chip DLP becomes affordable
ie WAF becomes realistic ;)

Yes,
I agree with you, Davo. I was disappointed with the Sony. Yes I thought
the blacks were better, but bloody hell, how DIM was it.
Plus the short throw lens would be no good for me anyway, and the price.

My brother bought an Infocus 4800 I bought a Pana ae500e.

Mine cost a little more but is much higer resolution, gives more natural
colours and is simply fantastic. The Pana's smooth screen technology
also just a bout completely eliminates the fly screen effect (in fact I
can't even see it when watching) and gives an image to rival a real
theatre. Also, coupled to a HD set top box it gives stunning TV viewing.
I am extremely happy with my PJ.

Why did I choose LCD over DLP. The projected image from a DLP makes my
wife feel physically sick and disoriented similar to vertigo and gives
her headaches after as little as 10 min viewing. I have read of many
people also suffering such effects from watching DLP. and no, she isn't
epileptic.

It's all to do with the projection method of the projector (DLPs are
basically a high frequency strobe) So before you do jump in and buy DLP
if you are considering one, make sure you, and anyone else in your
household who is going to be watching your PJ, actually sit and watch a
DLP for a at least ten to fifteen minutes to make sure you or they are
not going to be affected.

I use my PJ in a dark room so I run on low power mode (the difference is
barely noticeable)as that will give me up to 5000 hrs from the globe
which is quite a lot of viewing.

All that said, if you are pleased with the picture quality (and it
doesn't make you feel crook), then that's all that matters. Go ahead and
do it, you won't look back.
