View Full Version : Wireless A/V sender

Hi,
due to being in an apartment I need to wirelessly send my audio from the
hometheatre computer where the projector is to the speakers at the front..

I purchased an A/V sender .. (the WHome AVS24 from Tandy).. i asked the guy
at Tandy if the audio quality is great and he said it was.. I'm considering
taking this heap of junk back but wanted to know if anyone had suggestions
or any advice for me..
Basically it works quite well in the sending of the signal.. though the 100
metres it's meant to do is laughable.. across the family room it sends the
audio quite nicely with a little crackle if you walk between the sender and
the receiver..

My BIG problem is that it produces at continual HUM.. always HUMMING!..
kinda like the hum when you put your speakers really close to a large source
of power (yes, I've tried moving the things everywhere) .. in fact what I
did was to unplug the sender from any sound source and put it next to the
receiver, move them away from the power as far as possible.. and still the
minute I connect the receiver to the speaker (if it and the sender are on),
the humming starts.. I thought maybe it was the speaker, so I plugged in
headphones.. STILL HUMS.. the annoying part is no matter what I do the
humming doesn't diminish at all (besides turning the volume down to nil on
my speakers :) ) ..All I can assume is that the sender has some sort of amp
in it and the amp is shite..

Any ideas!? .. any suggestions of what to get instead if I do take this
back!? .. I was considering purchasing wireless speakers.. thought maybe
they had better "technology"!?? .. I really need suggestions as I'm at the
end of my tether and with an apartment solid concrete ceiling the only
option I have at the moment is to run the cord on the ground (not an option
as far as I'm concerned)

Thanks in Advance

Sean

Hi, thanks for the advice... I've tried all three channels.. A works fine
except for the hum.. B and C both have horrible interference (which I'm not
surprised about.. I DO run a wireless network - I did turn the network off
to see if the hum disappeared but to no avail)

I expect you will find nothing is really very satisfactory in regards to
the wireless transfer. It could be a problem with the grounding in the
Receiver, but I expect it is the unit itself. Get your money back and
try the Jaycar one.

What are you feeding from your computer, if it's Divx, you may be
better off purchasing a cheap DVD player that supports DIVX, I assume
you play DVD's off a Seperate DVD player not the PC.

If none of that works you will be stuck with cables. I live in a unit
to, cables are a pain, but I would never consider running my fronts
from wireless, sound quality etc would be diminished too much for my
liking. Maybe you should have thought things through a bit more before
deciding on the setup you have.

Hehe.. I haven't a lot of choice on setup.. I run a projector so I have to
have the players near the projector (otherwise I have video cables across
the floor) .. I run a linux box what does everything basically.. runs mythtv
with digital tv card, network setup for DivX and games, etc.. runs nicely ..
but the cables are a PAIN in the ASS.. :) .. sad fact of life.. I think I
WILL take this AV Sender back and get a different one.. in all honesty the
sound quality is quite good except for the continuous hum.. hmm, it _does_
sound like a grounding issue, but that doesn' make sense..

Thanks for the help anyway.

One last thought!and i don't know how to achieve it.Phase reversal!!!
On my sub a can reverse the phase 180 degrees. my sub hummed like hell
so i reversed the phase and NO HUM. good luck, maybe an electronics
wizz can help.

Sean ,Unless you have very low expectations none of the currently available
2.4Ghz A/V senders have the necessary bandwith or s/n to give anything like
hi-fi performance. The best comprimise would be to have the htpc beside the
projector ,at the back of the room ,and run a single spdf cable to the amps
digital input ,at the front of the room.Unless you are using a p.c. 5.1
speaker system the sound quality comprimises with an a/v sender would be so
great as to make the whole exercise a waste of your time and money.

hi Sean,

Why not take the unit to a mates place and try there, away from your
electronic gear -- if the unit is faulty you'll then know. I've got
two of them and they work perfectly; one going to my TV card from the
austar box, and another going into my bedroom television (from the
same). The picture is crystal clear and the sound crisp stereo; even
on the TV that gets moved around the bedroom all the time. I've got
lots of things that could interfere with their operation -- electric
fence 10 metres away, wireless security alarm, etc. The sender itself
sits right next to the big television in the lounge room, directly
adjacent to my hi-fi gear. I just got sick of cables, and the expense
of having them plumbed everywhere. Loose connections and poor AV
signals sent me looking for a better alternative -- I hope you can get
yours working! Just my two cents worth.

i returned the WHome one to Tandy and got the one from Jaycar instead
(Digitech)... it works a lot better as you said, the hum has gone! :) ...

Thanks,

Sean
