Hi people. I want to know what's a good reference point to set a subwoofer
after. I've got a good position in the room, but I can never be too sure if
I like the subwoofer settings or not. Is it better to set the sub level at
the maximum volume of the amp (not sub's amp), so that no distortion occurs
in the subwoofer, or is it best to set it to somethings at a more realistic
listening volume. When I set it at a lower volume, it can start to be a bit
distorted at high volumes. I'm using the stereo for home theatre and music,
so I know that may possibly mean that settings need to be changed for each
purpose.
For music, I generally use a song like Usher's "Yeah" which has a smooth
deep bass line. If I want to set it so that it is prevalent at low volumes,
I'd need to put the subwoofer level up a bit past mid way, but that means it
will start distorting at very high volume levels. For movies I often use the
Star Wars I race sequence and Pirates Of The Carribean on DTS, particularly
where Elizabeth falls in the water and the pirate coin sends out a loud,
deep shock wave. At loud level these can distort a bit, so I still need to
fix settings. Anyone one have any particular tips on generally how much bass
you'd want to come through from movies?
The driver on the subwoofer is 20cm. One other thing, is, how can you
genrally tell properly if the subwoofer is distorting. Is it when the bass
isn't so sharp as at lower levels, or do you look at the movement of the
driver itself?
TIA for any help.
