Well, I'll answer this one myself for anyone who might be interested.
According to Hitachi Australia Customer Service:
"The Asian instructions [and also the box I think] incorrectly show
the Scart connectors as not being used. They actually work perfectly
as genuine Scart RGB connections, the same as the European model."
